Apple has backported security patches addressing a remotely exploitable zero-day vulnerability to older iPhones and iPads.

This bug is tracked as CVE-2022-42856, and it stems from a type confusion weakness in Apple's Webkit web browser browsing engine.

Apple said that the flaw discovered by Clément Lecigne of Google's Threat Analysis Group allows maliciously crafted webpages to perform arbitrary code execution (and likely gain access to sensitive information) on vulnerable devices.

Apple released updates to iOS, iPad OS, and macOS after researchers from Toronto's Citizen Lab found a dangerous, hidden exploit buried in iMessage's code.

 

Apple has confirmed that it is working on a bug fix that will stop apps like Messages from crashing when they attempt to display a Unicode symbol representing a letter from the south Indian language of Telugu.

The Unicode-based bug has been exploited by juvenile pranksters, who posted app-crashing messages on Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, or even changed their screenname to one which contained the symbol.

The symbol, which I won’t repeat here for fear of crashing readers’ apps (trust me.. while writing this article I managed to bork my browser once at twice), can cause iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches and even Apple TV devices to endlessly reboot themselves if received in a notification. If you’re curious there’s a good write-up about it on Mozilla engineer Manish Goregaokar’s blog.

One security researcher demonstrated that it was possible to make macOS network applications crash by creating a Wi-Fi hotspot which included the offending symbol.

Another day, another patch to install. This time, it's iOS 11.2.2 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

The patch is to fix the Spectre vulnerability that came to light earlier this month.

Apple describes the patch as follows:

iOS 11.2.2 includes security improvements to Safari and WebKit to mitigate the effects of Spectre (CVE-2017-5753 and CVE-2017-5715).
Apple says it "recommends" the update "for all users."

To download the update, go to Settings > General > Software Update (the preferred way, and this way the patch is only about 75MB), or connect your iPhone to a computer running iTunes and then carry out the update (this is slower and downloads the entire iOS 11.2.2 package, which is several gigabytes, as opposed to just the smaller update).

Durch eine massive Sicherheitslücke in den Computerchips von Milliarden Geräten können auf breiter Front vertrauliche Daten abgeschöpft werden.

Jetzt hat Apple bestätigt, dass auch „alle Mac-Systeme und iOS-Geräte betroffen sind“. Im Klartext: Jeder Apple-Computer, jedes iPhone und jedes iPad könnte von Hackern angegriffen werden. Bislang seien aber keine solche Attacken bekannt, erklärt Apple in einem Hilfe-Dokument. 

Was müssen Besitzer von Apple-Geräten wissen?

Nach Angaben des Unternehmens wurde eines der beiden möglichen Angriffsszenarien („Meltdown“)  bereits mit Aktualisierungen seiner Betriebssysteme abgestellt. Auf Geräten, die mit iOS 11.2, MacOS 10.13.2 bzw. tvOS 11.2 arbeiten, soll diese Angriffsmöglichkeit nicht mehr möglich sein.


Mit einem Update für den Internet-Browser Safari solle in den nächsten Tagen auch das Angriffsszenario „Spectre“ verhindert werden. Die Apple Watch ist laut Apple nicht von der Sicherheitslücke betroffen, benötigt daher keine Aktualisierung. 

Apple empfiehlt außerdem dringend, Apps oder Programme ausschließlich aus sicheren Quellen wie dem eigenen App-Store zu laden. Andernfalls laufe man Gefahr, gefährliche Spionagesoftware aufs eigene Gerät zu holen.

After releasing iOS 10 earlier today, some users are reporting ‘bricked’ devices after attempting to update to the new operating system. Most of the issues seem to come from over-the-air (OTA) updates, meaning a device that attempts to download and install the update without plugging it in — something Apple used to require.

The issues seem fairly widespread. The OTA update begins and leaves users staring at a ‘Connect to iTunes’ screen that forces a complete firmware re-install. If you forego the wiping and re-installation of iOS from your iPhone or iPad, you’re left with a bricked and completely useless device.

Mises au jour par Citizen Lab et Lookout, les vulnérabilités - anciennement 0-day - de sécurité regroupées sous le nom de Trident ont largement fait parler d'elles la semaine dernière. Présentes dans iOS pendant plusieurs années, leur exploitation a permis l'espionnage de l'iPhone par un malware dénommé Pegasus.

Ce malware a été développé par la firme israélienne NSO Group spécialisée dans l'écoute de téléphonie mobile pour les États. Sa découverte a été presque fortuite suite à l'alerte donnée par un dissident politique aux Émirats arabes unis.

Comme on pouvait s'en douter, les fameuses failles corrigées dans iOS 9.3.5 sont également présentes dans OS X. Les deux systèmes d'exploitation partagent un socle de code commun. Le système d'exploitation pour ordinateur Mac a ainsi droit aujourd'hui à des mises à jour pour combler les vulnérabilités Trident.

Apple ne s'étale pas sur le sujet et livre ses patchs sans évoquer la dangerosité liée aux vulnérabilités. En l'occurrence, OS X El Capitan et Yosemite bénéficient de correctifs pour les failles CVE-2016-4655 et CVE-2016-4656 dans les zones mémoire du noyau et pour les manipuler.

La faille, qui touche aussi bien les iPhones que les iPad et les Mac, menace notamment la confidentialité de vos codes et mots de passe.

 

Le fiasco pourrait être de même ampleur que pour Stagefright, la faille critique qui avait fait trembler les utilisateurs d'Android. Dans un post de blog, Tyler Bohan, un chercheur en sécurité informatique de l'entreprise Cisco Talos, il existerait actuellement une faille de sécurité importante dans iOS et Mac OS X, qui permettrait notamment à un pirate de récupérer un mot de passe d'iPhone simplement à partir de l'envoi d'un iMessage ou d'un MMS. 

Comment cette faille fonctionne-t-elle ? Selon le chercheur, il suffit qu'un individu mal intentionnéenvoie sur votre appareil, par message multimédia, un petit programme qu'il aura intégré dans une image de format TIFF. 

Une fois le message reçu sur votre appareil, le programme en question s'exécute alors tout seul, même si vous n'ouvrez pas le message en question. Il exploite alors une faille dans l'interface de programmation applicative (API) qui gère les données image (imageIO) qui lui permet d'accéder à des données auxquelles un programme de ce type n'est pas censé accéder, telles que vos mots de passe de réseau wi-fi ou de messagerie.

Décidément les chercheurs du Palo Alto Networks ont fort à faire ces dernières semaines. Après le ransomware KeRanger détecté sur MacOSX, c'est au tour d'iOS d'être touché par un nouveau malware. Toutefois, AceDeceiver fait dans la nouveauté. Au lieu d'essayer de leurrer les systèmes d'Apple, ce dernier a trouvé un moyen de pénétrer iOS sans même avoir besoin d'un quelconque certificat.

Habituellement lorsqu'un utilisateur achète et télécharge des applications depuis iTunes/App Store, la boutique demande obligatoirement un code d'autorisation afin d'approuver et de sécuriser l'installation. 
Dans le cas de cette attaque, les hackers ont exploité une faille pour récupérer le code généré par iTunes. De cette manière, ils peuvent installer n'importe quelle application souhaitée sur appareil. Ils ont par la suite développé un logiciel qui simule le comportement d'un client iTunes cela permet de leurrer le système qui pense que l'application a bien été achetée et qu'elle est sécurisée. L'installation de l'application corrompue ce fait alors sans aucun problème sur votre appareil.

Ce type d'attaque "man in the middle" est très problématique car quand bien même les applications corrompues sont supprimées de l'App Store, la faille reste accessible.
