What it is: A planner with monthly calendar pages.

How I use it: For every day of the month, I draw a little doodle. Most of them are really simple and take no more than a minute or two to draw, but it gets my mind working and puts me in a creating mood.

It's a simple and easily accessible exercise with big benefits. As a writer, I spend most of my time thinking in words. But my doodle calendar challenges me to think in images, which is totally different. And sometimes I fail--some of my doodles are just random crap that doesn't look like anything or make any sense. But that's OK, because I'm still challenging my brain to think in a different way.
