October is National Bullying Prevention Month

The Kansas Legislature has recognized the need for dealing with the issue of bullying in the schools. KSA 72-8256 requires Kansas schools to have a bullying prevention policy and provide training for students and staff.
“The culture of bullying won’t end until people across the country take action and show children and teens that they care,” says Julie Hertzog, director of PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, which has sponsored the month since 2006. PACER’s motto is “The End of Bullying Begins with You.”
Randy J. Wiler, director of the Kansas Bullying Prevention Program released a baseline survey of nearly 19,000 students from 74 Kansas schools. The survey reveals that 35.1 percent of Kansas students in grades three-12 are regularly victimized by students who bully.
