Pokemon GO isn't the only app that seamlessly blends virtual objects into the real world.

In a very short time, Pokemon GO has pushed augmented reality (AR) into the mainstream. Its ability to overlay digital animations onto the real world using your phone's camera and screen is unlike any other popular game before it. But Pokemon GO isn't the only app that seamlessly blends virtual objects into the real world. Here are the best AR apps not linked with Nintendo.

While Pokémon GO has became a cultural phenomenon, it is not the first, nor the last, augmented reality application.

"Pokémon Go!" When I saw this headline, my interest was piqued. What other apps use augmented reality as seamlessly as Pokémon Go? Turns out, quite a few. Most are game-related but others involve shopping. All of them involve socially interacting with others. Social interaction is exactly what the world needs more of -- interaction with people. After COVID, we are still learning how to socialize with others in a less fearful stance, and games like these can help to calm our anxieties about hanging out with people.

This Amazing Accessory TURNS Your iPad Into a 3-D Scanner

More than a cool gadget, the team at Occipital hopes to create a platform that will give smartphones and tablets a new set of super powers.

This is unreal - having the ability to scan to millimeter precision is incredibly powerful. It's like having a precise Kinect attached to your iPad. Watch the video to see a bunch of really useful use cases. When it comes to 3D scanning and 3D Augmented Reality this is a major game changer.
I'm going to try to order one today - if you are curious about working with this platform - let me know.

Really made my day! I wonder if with the use of haptix stereo camera it would be possible to improve the results even further and get all the material information.

AR: Augmented Reality Is ALMOST Everywhere

AR: Augmented Reality Is ALMOST Everywhere | Machines Pensantes | Scoop.it

There is less difference between our work and home devices, our tablets and our mobile phones. They are not meant for “work” or for the “home.” We just use them wherever we are. The idea of a balance or even the concept of an enterprise hardware manufacturer seems quaint.

The difference, really, is in the applications we choose to apply with these things we wear over our eyes and hold in our hands. Hardware like Google Glass and Atheer Labs 3D Augmented Reality glasses are all badass, of course.  But the data is the special sauce that makes these tools work for us. Like the smartphone, augmented reality is also something neither for work or at home. Instead it’s a layer that can be applied to our home and work life.

Good end of year overview to where AR is going particular with BIM and AEC/field work.

I'm glad to see people increasing referring to AR not as a technology but instead by it's usecase - for example, helping with in field repair/assembly support.

PS I love the structural sensor (see my previous blog post).

"The future of augmented reality is tied to devices like the iPad. But that’s just the foundation for a next generation of apps. These apps will leverage endless stores of data that will take the form of physical objects and provide people with expert knowledge that will be immediately available. This will allow us to see the world in whole new ways and forever transform how we live and work."
