Barclaycard, which processes nearly half of the UK’s credit and debit card transactions, has extended an existing provisional agreement with Alipay, enabling retailers across the country to accept the Chinese payment app at the point-of-sale.

Andriod Pay preps for UK market where Andriod has 54% of market. UK consumers are high contactless uses and a transition to Andriod Pay will be a lot faster than experiences in US. Barclays continues to steer away from other Pay solutions in favor of its own!

Barclaycard offers UK's 1st Android phone NFC payment application. Two features include: 1. transaction values raised to PS100 with use of PIN instead of standard PS30; and 2. lost and stolen card replaced with virtual card to allow continuity of NFC app usage. No news on Barclayscard joining iPhone payment ecosystem yet!

Across UK and US, banks are dabbling on the right strategic mix of branches vs. digital play - both have a place to serve the same customer, however the former (branch) is less now for transactional purposes rather for financial advice! Barclays, Fifth Third and others have closed a number of branches whereas others are refurbishing or moving to smaller properties to assist! Customer relationships will likely deepen with a balance of digital and branch play!
