The idea was cute. It always is.


Ask members of the public to post there selfies with New York police officers, tag them with #myNYPD, and sing "Kumbayah" together. OK, that last part maybe not.


The response was overwhelming -- overwhelmingly bad. Soon the hashtag was used as a bashtag....

Bozeman, Mont: Great place to visit. Even better place to leave? The Montana Office of Tourism has been in damage-control mode since Friday, when it posted this status update to its official Facebook page: "F this job.

 

I just want to live in Whitefish with my future husband. Leaving Bozeman for good tomorrow. I love you with all my heart and you are not leaving me. Never. Thanks for the good times MercuryCSC!"


If that seems like a poor pitch for getting people to visit Montana, that's because it was a personal message from someone at the client's agency, MercuryCSC, meant for that person's own Facebook page. The client quickly deleted the post and then explained its origins to the press....

News today from down under that Qantas Airways is closing its Twitter PR account.

 

What are they thinking?

 

This is like going back to the media relations days of the caveman.

 

Australian marketing magazine mUmBrella reports Qantas will shutter its Twitter news account on April 19th. It expects it’s online newsroom to deliver the news.

Qantas dropped its Twitter news account, making a very curious statement about its social media strategies. It also raises the question of mixing marketing and news in potential crises in the future.
