Digital marketing jobs are the most in demand for marketing departments, while advertising and content rank as the most sought after skills, according to a recent hiring report which discovered that the need for marketing talent exceeds the supply with mid-level marketers the most in demand.

The study polled over 300 directors, vice presidents, C-level marketing executives, as well as hiring managers. Focusing on the issues and trends that are important to the careers of those in the marketing departments, the report concludes that hiring numbers are at times inconsistent across marketing functions as is the supply of available talent....

After years of grim news for the news industry marked by seemingly endless rounds of staff cutbacks, it’s not unusual for those thinking about a career in journalism or veterans trying to find a new job to look at options in related fields. One field outpacing journalism both in sheer numbers and in salary growth is public relations.


The salary gap between public relations specialists and news reporters has widened over the past decade – to almost $20,000 a year, according to 2013 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data analyzed by the Pew Research Center. At the same time, the public relations field has expanded to a degree that these specialists now outnumber reporters by nearly 5 to 1 (BLS data include part-time and full-time employees, but not self-employed.)...

A recent report named public relations specialists one of the nation’s best jobs. 

According to U.S. News and World Report, PR specialist is No. 51 on the list of the top 100 careers, sandwiched between construction manager (No. 50) and middle school teacher (No. 52). 

Here’s how U.S. News and World Report described the job of PR specialist: 

“There’s a lot of finesse involved in producing and distributing materials that uphold and promote a client’s image. The field’s elite also have a gift for gab and understand the art of the sell. Expect this occupation to grow by nearly 23 percent by 2020.”...

Study: PR manager is the seventh most ‘overrated’ job | PR Daily

It’s stressful and the field is crowded, says the study’s authors. Meanwhile, No. 1 on this dubious list is advertising executive.

 

Public relations is an overrated job.

 

That’s what the jobs website CareerCast.com is saying in its recent study that ranks the 12 most overrated careers.

 

PR manager is No. 7 on the list. According to CareerCast:

“Stress levels on public relations managers are among the highest of all careers because of demanding media, audience and clients. The pursuit of jobs is also competitive. Public relations also is among the most common majors for recent college graduates, adding more competition into the candidate pool.”...

According to PR News’ 2015 Salary Survey, written communications (57 percent) and media relations (48 percent) are considered two of the top PR skills most important for advancement within an organization.


The survey, which took the pulse of 1,133 PR and marketing executives, also found that content creation (54 percent) trumped both crisis management (22 percent) and reputation management (32 percent) when it comes to skills most important for career advancement....

Amid widespread year-on-year increases across the US, three regions in particular saw notable spikes in median salary compared with last year.

The Northeast region saw a 12.9% hike (from $91,000 to $102,700); The Central region increased 21.2% (from $78,000 to $94,500); and the Plain States rose 9.8% (from $76,500 to $84,000).

If you have made any kind of a career change in the past decade, more than likely you did not find your new position through a job fair or want ad. Yet, this is how many of my college students expect to find a job this spring when they graduate. Surprised? Read on.


One of the most aggravating experiences I have as a teacher (at two different universities) is the lack of ambition demonstrated by students today and the almost total absence of a professional networking presence on the social web.


Sure everybody is on Facebook, but marketing undergrads are simply not utilizing social media platforms like LinkedIn and blogging to their full potential for business purposes. Last week, I conducted a non-scientific study on LinkedIn use among my undergraduate students and an underwhelming 10% of my students have a LinkedIn Profile! Note students are traditional and non-traditional undergrads, working and non-working, and a mix of majors....

Here’s a puzzle for you: What do advertising and promotion managers have in common with construction helpers, carpenter helpers, stucco masons, typists, textile machine workers, and people who operate drilling and boring machines?Answer: They’re all working in areas where U.S. jobs are disappearing the fastest, according to a special report from 24/7 Wall Street.


Moreover, of all those categories, advertising and promotions is the worst, having shed 65% of all jobs over the past decade. “No occupation has lost a higher proportion of its jobs than advertising and promotions managers,” the report claims.You're better off working in a textile mill, running a drill press, or hauling two-by-fours for a carpenter than you are if you pursue a career in advertising...

Shock and awe, more disruption ahead... Read about the rampant job losses in the advertising industry, and the shift it reflects in consumer behavior. 


Of course it's not exclusive to advertising either. PR and marketing have disrupted too. I suspect many new social media, brand journalism, native advertising, website special is in similar Internet jobs have placed these job losses, I haven't seen the research yet. Any suggestions from readers?

I’ve noticed an alarming trend lately–there seems to be significant amount of good YOUNG social media talent (22-30 year-olds), but very little strong social/digital talent between the ages of 30-45.

 

Good news for me, I guess–I’m 40 and fall right in the Gen X sweet spot. I have 18-plus years of experience in the corporate and agency worlds in marketing and communications. And 4-5 years experience with social/digital (not a ton, but enough considering the discipline hasn’t been around that long). Only problem is, I’m not looking for a corporate or agency job 


But, what I continue to see if a lack of talent at the mid- to senior-levels in the social/digital arenas.


Why do I say this? I get emails from friends/colleagues around Minneapolis/St. Paul and they’re all looking for the same person. That mid- to senior-level digital/social media counselor/director with deep experience in marketing and some experience in digital/social.

 

Except they don’t exist–at least not in big numbers....

When it comes to jobs, internet-media businesses are the new mainstream media.


Internet media this year became the media industry's second-largest employment sector, according to Ad Age DataCenter's analysis of Bureau of Labor stats data.


One in six people employed in the U.S. media industry now work for internet-media businesses, according to Ad Age's analysis.
Employment at U.S. internet-media businesses in July passed staffing in broadcast TV. Internet-media employment earlier passed magazines, radio and cable TV.

 

The only U.S. media sector with more employees: newspapers. But papers over the past 12 months have cut an average of 1,400 jobs a month while internet-media businesses have added an average 400 jobs a month....
