How to Create a Twitter Moment: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Create a Twitter Moment: A Step-by-Step Guide | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

When more than 9,000 tweets are published per second, it can be hard to find great content on the platform. So in 2015, Twitter rolled out Twitter Moments -- curated tweets revolving around a single topic or story, all in one place.

Initially, only Twitter and its editorial partners, such as BuzzFeed and The New York Times, could curate Moments. Last year, however, Twitter opened up Moments for all Twitter users. Now, all content creators on the platform can compile groups of tweets. Whether it’s about an event, a campaign, or a pop culture moment, marketers can take advantage of this feature and potentially get discovered by new followers.

In this blog post, we’ll dive into the 411 on Twitter Moments, how to create them, and how brands can use them....

Twitter's new, longer tweets are coming September 19

Twitter's new, longer tweets are coming September 19 | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Twitter is about to make a big change to the way that tweets work, The Verge can independently confirm. Beginning September 19th, the company will cut down on exactly which types of content count toward the platform's 140-character limit. Media attachments (images, GIFs, videos, polls, etc.) and quoted tweets will no longer reduce the count. The extra room for text will give users more flexibility in composing their messages.

Twitter first announced plans to stop counting extras like photos, videos, and user polls toward the limit back in May, but gave no firm date on when the shift would occur. A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment when contacted by The Verge. The date comes from two sources familiar with the company's business, but plans for the rollout could change.

Another new adjustment to the character limit is that usernames will no longer count when they're at the beginning of replies, giving users additional room for discussion. It's unclear whether all of these changes will occur simultaneously; certain content types may gradually stop counting against the character limit in stages. But the company will at least kick off the move next Monday....

More filling - great news!

How Twitter bios can help you find your audience

How Twitter bios can help you find your audience | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Columnist Chris Kerns takes a deep dive into the profile descriptions for millions of Twitter users to bring you insight into why you need to look beyond just tweets to target your audience.

Social media is as much about sharing information as expressing a certain kind of image to the rest of the world. Being able to choose the moments we want to share (and leave out the ones we’d rather not) gives users the ability to curate a public perception — a mix of who we really are and who we want to be.

But these self-identifying labels are not just in messages; they’re also in our profile descriptions. Some people choose to list their job, others an allegiance to a favorite sports team. By looking at profile descriptions for millions of Twitter users, we can see some interesting patterns emerge about how groups of people describe themselves....

Twitter now bills itself as a news app, not a social network - Digiday

Twitter now bills itself as a news app, not a social network - Digiday | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Eagle-eyed Twitter users have noticed that it’s now categorizing itself very differently in the Apple App Store.

In an update yesterday, Twitter now sits in the News category rather than Social Networking. The move shifts it away from its competitors like Facebook, Snapchat and Kik. The switch boosted the app from sixth place in Social Networking to first place within News, according to App Annie.

But why? Twitter didn’t immediately respond for comment, but the change is a quick way to boost its visibility within the App Store’s rankings and bring in new users.
Jeff Domansky's insight:

This is an odd move by Twitter. I don't think it will help attract new users but rather confuse its loyal user base. It isn't just a news app although it's very good at that. In many respects, this move is guaranteed to push away the younger demographic.

Over time, I have learned through careful, and not so careful, trial & error how to be relevant to my particular audience, and I am achieving better results because of it.

Cultivating a strong presence on Twitter has many benefits: you support your organization’s marketing efforts, you can use it to sell socially, you can build your personal brand, or any combination of these things. Based on my first-hand observations, marketers and sales-people don’t treat their personal brand enough like a real brand. Here are four common mistakes they make when using Twitter and how to correct them:

How to Easily Make Tweetable Quotes

How to Easily Make Tweetable Quotes | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The simple-to-follow instructions in this post will work for self-hosted WordPress blogs (WordPress.org) and for Blogger blogs. If you are on the free version of WordPress (.com)  sometimes they work but more often they don’t. After  a lot of investigation I’ve learned this is because WordPress.com does not allow Javascript code in posts, so it deletes the word “script” when saving a post – and this breaks the code. I have tried several workarounds, but as yet have not been able to get anything to work consistently. (I will keep trying!)

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Why make Tweetable quotes? People are more likely to tweet your post from a quote. Very easy to do.

Twitter Just Shut Down Vine 4 Years After Buying It for $30 Million

Twitter Just Shut Down Vine 4 Years After Buying It for $30 Million | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Vine will not be an infinite loop.

It was four years ago this month when Twitter bought Vine for a reported $30 million, but now the relationship has fully withered. On a Medium blog post, Twitter revealed that it's shutting down the looping video app in the coming weeks.

"You'll be able to access and download your Vines," the post read. "We'll be keeping the website online because we think it's important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website."

How long the Vine videos will live on the website is unknown, but creation of the mobile app's six-second clips has already been halted. It's a fairly surprising move....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

That's a very surprising move by Twitter – to close down Vine after attracting 200 million users. The problem is, at six seconds, Vines were never long enough and too limited in scope to tell a real story. Twitter is likely to undergo big changes, very quickly in order to survive. The layoffs and live streaming of NFL football are first steps in a new path to the future.

Elon Musk and the rise of the social executive

Elon Musk and the rise of the social executive | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Anyone paying attention to the technology world over the past few years can tell you that Elon Musk is… different. He thinks differently from most CEOs — most notably leveraging his fortune to build an electric car company that no one said would work, and two other companies at the same time. He talks differently from most CEOs, diving deep into theories on humanity and gushing about science fiction more than discussing balance sheets.

But the best measure of how he’s different is how he acts, and there’s no better place to see that in action than on Twitter.

On Twitter, Musk (@elonmusk) is an anomaly. He not only has more followers than his own car company (@TeslaMotors), but he also has more followers than @Ford, @Chevrolet and @Chrysler— combined.

His personal account gets mentioned on Twitter more often than any American car company and sees more engagement than any of them. All without the help of ad budgets and teams of social media strategists.

So what is Musk doing on social media that marketers can learn from? How has he continued to build a base of followers who hang on his every word?

Shareaholic: Twitter Sharing Drops 11% After Twitter Kills Share Counts | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Has Twitter’s killing of share counts on tweet buttons reduced people’s sharing activity?

By one measure, yes. Shareaholic reported today that it’s seeing 11.28 percent less sharing using the Twitter button on its network since Twitter turned off tweet count totals on Nov. 20.

The reduction is in the “share of voice,” the relative share of people using the Twitter button as opposed to buttons for Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn and other social networks’ social sharing buttons on the more than 300,000 sites that use Shareaholic’s social sharing plugin. In the 3 1/2 months before Nov. 20, Twitter had a 12.39 percent Shareaholic share of voice average; in the two weeks since, the average has dropped to 11 percent....

Why you Should be Using Twitter Lists - RAW Digital Training

Why you Should be Using Twitter Lists - RAW Digital Training | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Twitter lists are possibly one of the most underrated tools of Twitter, from organising who you follow to finding out what your competitors are posting, it is essential.

Amongst the hundreds of tweets you potentially view per day, it’s easy to scroll past tweets that interest you, or that are important. Twitter lists make missing important tweets a thing of the past. You can create your own, subscribe or be added to peoples lists. Lists allow you organise your followers (or even people you don’t follow) into categories which stream tweets from all of the people in the list in one place.

Twitter lists can either be public or private. Public lists are visible to anyone browsing your profile and people may be notified by Twitter as you add them to a public list.  Private lists for example, are a perfect way to gather all of your competitors twitter feeds in one place keeping you aware of their deals, products, ideas etc without the need to follow them directly....
