Inside Gab: The New Twitter Alternative Championed By The Alt-Right

Inside Gab: The New Twitter Alternative Championed By The Alt-Right | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The purge is happening. At least according to the universe of alt-right users on social media: Many of them claim that in recent days their Twitter accounts have been suspended and that their posts on Facebook are not being promoted or shared like they used to. It’s all part of a crackdown on "fake news" in the wake of reports that misleading reports shared on Facebook and Twitter helped influence the election.

To many, these efforts are an overdue attempt to maintain online civility. But to others it’s blatant censorship."Hateful and harassment are subjective terms.

"For those alt-right individuals and other social media refugees who feel that their views are suppressed, there’s a new social network that promises a digital space for completely free and unfettered communications. Gab, a platform that looks and feels like a combination of Twitter and Reddit, is meant to "put people first and promote people first," as it was described to me by its founder.

And this week, it’s been attracting thousands of users, many of them alt-righters exiled from Facebook and Twitter, though its founder insists that it aims to expand beyond that community and build a more diverse audience....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

A dispatch from the new censorship-defying social network in the wake of "the purge" of alt-right users on Facebook and Twitter this week. For better or for worse, some will need to monitor Gab.

Twitter's new, longer tweets are coming September 19

Twitter's new, longer tweets are coming September 19 | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Twitter is about to make a big change to the way that tweets work, The Verge can independently confirm. Beginning September 19th, the company will cut down on exactly which types of content count toward the platform's 140-character limit. Media attachments (images, GIFs, videos, polls, etc.) and quoted tweets will no longer reduce the count. The extra room for text will give users more flexibility in composing their messages.

Twitter first announced plans to stop counting extras like photos, videos, and user polls toward the limit back in May, but gave no firm date on when the shift would occur. A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment when contacted by The Verge. The date comes from two sources familiar with the company's business, but plans for the rollout could change.

Another new adjustment to the character limit is that usernames will no longer count when they're at the beginning of replies, giving users additional room for discussion. It's unclear whether all of these changes will occur simultaneously; certain content types may gradually stop counting against the character limit in stages. But the company will at least kick off the move next Monday....

More filling - great news!

Twitter courts small businesses with a new 'Dashboard' app

Twitter courts small businesses with a new 'Dashboard' app | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Twitter is looking to get small business owners more involved in its service with its latest standalone app.

Similar to tweet-tracking platforms Tweetdeck and Hootsuite, the new Dashboard app lets businesses monitor chatter about products, key words or hashtags that might escape direct "@" mentions. They can also schedule a lineup of tweets, see a more detailed readout on how tweets perform and even get auto-generated suggestions for potential messages.

For instance, the app could surface a praising tweet from a customer that a business might have otherwise missed, then prompt the brand to retweet it or respond in a certain way.

While bigger brands with dedicated social media teams have access to more sophisticated tools through Twitter's partnership program, the free app is geared towards small and medium-sized companies that are just interested in the condensed, easy-to-use basics....

The free, new Twitter tool lets brands track mentions and schedule tweets. Definitely worth checking out!

In a sea of 6,000 tweets per second, how do you make yours stand out?

Now, when Twitter shows you your engagement rate, they include all engagements: Link Clicks, Retweets, Favorites, and Replies. However, that figure can be misleading, as even a few engagements on a tweet that didn’t get many impressions can show a higher than average engagement rate.

I like to focus on retweets, since these help you increase your overall reach. More people sharing your tweets means more eyes on your content, which in turn offers the potential for even greater engagement.

Here’s What 10,000 Characters Looks Like

Here’s What 10,000 Characters Looks Like | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

So, Recode reported today that Twitter was tinkering around with the idea of expanding its 140 character limit to a number a bit higher….10,000 characters.

But what, you ask (and I’m glad you did), does 10,000 characters look like? Well, hey. Let’s find out.

Soooo, did you see the Warriors game last night? Crazy, right? It was nice to see Harrison Barnes back and the entire crowd cheered when he entered the game. Steph Curry is probably not human, because he shoots the ball from the parking lot and it swishes like butter. How many characters am I up to now? Lemme check, so hold on….

597....

I think Twitter hasn't thought through the implementation carefully enough as well as the potential negative impact on the speed and utility that makes Twitter the perfect tool that it is, as it is, now. If you think we have trouble filtering out crap now, stay tuned.

The Types of Twitter Images Marketers Love the Most

The Types of Twitter Images Marketers Love the Most | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The stats don’t lie – if you want to share better tweets, you need to think visually.

Images score your tweets more clicks, favorites, and retweets, so it’s no surprise that 55% of all tweets sent by brands include them.

But just like you get writer’s block when you’re trying to outline your next blog post, you might get creatively blocked when you’re trying to think of an image to attach to a tweet.

Everybody gets a little stuck sometimes. Not sure what kind of visual would go best with your next tweet? One of these classics is sure to do the trick....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Using these mega popular types of images on Twitter? You should be! Check out these examples from the pros and our favorite resources for making your own.

donhornsby's curator insight, May 4, 2017 9:34 AM
Twitter is literally made for sharing soundbite-sized thoughts, making it just about the perfect venue for quotes. They’re super-shareable, which can help you reach tons of new fans in a short period of time, and since they so rarely become outdated, you can put together a list in one sitting and then share them in a trickle over time. Putting your quote of choice on an image makes it more noticeable (and, statistically, more shareable), it gives you the freedom of not adhering to the 140-character rule, and it allows you to add your own commentary. The image doesn’t even have to be particularly bold – all you really need is an attractive typeface, and you’re done.

Twitter now bills itself as a news app, not a social network - Digiday

Twitter now bills itself as a news app, not a social network - Digiday | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Eagle-eyed Twitter users have noticed that it’s now categorizing itself very differently in the Apple App Store.

In an update yesterday, Twitter now sits in the News category rather than Social Networking. The move shifts it away from its competitors like Facebook, Snapchat and Kik. The switch boosted the app from sixth place in Social Networking to first place within News, according to App Annie.

But why? Twitter didn’t immediately respond for comment, but the change is a quick way to boost its visibility within the App Store’s rankings and bring in new users.
Jeff Domansky's insight:

This is an odd move by Twitter. I don't think it will help attract new users but rather confuse its loyal user base. It isn't just a news app although it's very good at that. In many respects, this move is guaranteed to push away the younger demographic.
