Imagine you work for the Central Intelligence Agency?
Checking your voicemail two months ago via your satellite smartphone, you hear this new assignment:
Agent Smith. Your mission today, should you decide to accept, is to plan and launch our new CIA Twitter account....
It's no small task these days to keep up with all the recent social media changes. Only a few weeks ago, we talked about the biggest new Facebook changes where the link posting iterations especially changed a lot of our behaviors.
Looking at the biggest social media statistics, it’s clear that Twitter, with 215 million active users, also needs to constantly change to keep up with the tide.
As Twitter continues to grow, the company is making big changes more often and they’re easy to miss. In case you didn’t catch them, I collected seven of the most recent Twitter changes to get you up to speed....
It didn’t take long for visiting New York University professor Geoffrey Miller to start damage control last week after he told “obese PhD applicants” they wouldn’t have the will power to finish dissertations if they “didn’t have the willpower to stop eating carbs.”
...Don’t think his backpedaling will help him out, however. Whether your bio warns that “views are my own” or that “RTs aren’t endorsements,” Twitter disclaimers won’t save you when questionable social media use gets you in hot water at work....
If all of the business to business marketers could come up to the front of the room please? Now, could you raise your hand if you think Twitter is the number one social platform for business? Hmm…wow, B2B Marketing is right. 85% of you chose Twitter as your number one social platform. LinkedIn? A close second with 82%. YouTube and Facebook? 77% and 71%. Finally, Google+? (Quick count) Yep, 36%. That’s actually higher than I expected so go Google....
@sree, @jasonfalls, @prtini, @shonali, @jaybaer, @peterhimler, @laermer and @prsarahevans are some of the top social media, PR and journalism experts to follow on Twitter…. but who do they follow? Last week at a Cision “Behind the Story” breakfast panel, Sree Sreenivasan was discussing how PR pros and journalists interact on Twitter and said, “I find PR people (and journalists) are generally using Twitter poorly. Some of them use it very well and those are the ones that succeed. The best PR people I work with are the ones who are connected, not because of Twitter, but because they read a lot, know the issues and have a great rolodex.” He challenged the panelists to identify some great PR pros on Twitter, people who are “doing it right.” In addition to the panel’s recommendations (I’ve included Sree’s below), I asked some industry experts – and my personal favorites to follow on Twitter – who in PR they thought did it right on Twitter. See below why I follow them and who they recommend...
New research study identifies Twitter Tribes by unique words As a Twitter power user, I couldn’t resist looking into this Twitter research study on word usage in my favorite micropublishing channel. It’s fascinating to say the least. It’s titled "Word usage mirrors community structure in the online social network Twitter." Researchers looked at more than 250,000 users to define some very interesting Tribes. Who knew Twitter users were forming such unique Tribes and speaking their own language? Academics really do provide a useful service for the rest of us. Pointing out the sociological implications of social media and everything else we do....
Jon Lee Anderson, a writer for a weekly magazine called the New Yorker, got angry on Twitter today. A reader with the Twitter name of Mitch Lake (@mlake9) had tweeted at Anderson (@jonleeanderson) to dispute a claim of fact in Anderson's online story about the death of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez. Anderson had written that Chavez had left his country as "one of the world's most oil-rich but socially unequal countries," and Lake countered that in fact Venezuela was the second-least unequal country in the Americas. Lake was rude, using the internet idiom "wtf," which is an abbreviation for "What the fuck?" Whatever high ground may have belonged to Anderson, however, turned into a mudslide within the next 140 characters...

At almost any given time, it seems, someone is hosting a Twitter chat somewhere. So, how do you decide which ones to attend? To help you decide, I made a list of the best chats for marketers. Trading at the speed of tweets.... Wall Street operates at twitch-level speed, trading stocks on information the moment it comes in over the wire. So it sorta makes sense that Bloomberg, one of the world’s largest providers of financial information, will soon incorporate Twitter, the real-time information service used by 200 million people around the world, into Bloomberg’s international information platform....
HubSpot, a marketing software company founded at MIT in 2006, has revealed a brand-new analytics tool that could help companies more effectively use Twitter for branding or promotional purposes. ...Retweet Lab's data is simple to use and surprisingly powerful. For example, in my case it revealed that I get the most retweets at around 7 p.m., even tough I usually tweet the most at 9 a.m. Thanks to the Retweet Lab data, I can now start tweeting more around 7 p.m. and in theory improve my Twitter influence. Similarly, the tool notes that tweets without "calls for action," such as "please tweet this," are infinitely more effective at generating retweets than ones that include such pleas. While this sort of information is useful for my own personal "brand," it's much more likely to be useful for bigger publishers or well-known brands....
