In case you haven't already heard, bots are the new black.

Seriously. So read on to learn about a few neat bots we've enjoyed using so far this year...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Pancho est vraiment cool, je confirme. Kayak travel complètement nul, affligeant même. Dominos pizza est déjà un cas d'école et Resistbot une belle idée à copier.

Bot Fraud Estimated At $6.5B Globally In 2017, ANA Says

Bot Fraud Estimated At $6.5B Globally In 2017, ANA Says | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Advertising spending should increase by 10% or more this year, but a study released Wednesday by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) and White Ops estimates the economic losses due to bot fraud at $6.5 billion globally in 2017 -- down 10% from the $7.2 billion reported in 2016.

The Bot Baseline Report analyzes the digital advertising activity of 49 ANA members between October 2016 and January 2017.

"Extrapolating the results of the participants to the overall global market would result in 2017 fraud losses of just $3.3 billion — about half of the $6.5 billion general market projection," per the study.

ANA CEO Bob Liodice called the results of the study "a powerful indicator that the war on digital ad fraud is winnable for those who establish proper controls and protocols."...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Bot fraud was worth a staggering $7.2 billion in 2016, though it is expected to drop to 6.5 billion in 2017.

Why the Rudest Chatbot Is the Best Chatbot

Why the Rudest Chatbot Is the Best Chatbot | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Ahead of us, there are two roads:

A future based on artificial intelligence, building toward a real understanding of what a person is saying, then generating the right response. This is hard to do with a high degree of accuracy, and leads to all sorts of potentially creepy sci-fi futures.

A future of controllable, scripted responses to a fixed set of commands. These bots may be full of personality and generate complex scripts, but their understanding is basic, and they can’t guarantee a nuanced response.

Choosing the right road means choosing the right way to understand the other side of the conversation. To what degree should a bot anticipate what’s happening on the other side of the wall?...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Chatbots don’t need to bother with human niceties. Intercom’s Elizabeth McGuane makes a case for erring on the side of silence.

What Marketers Can Learn About Chatbots From Pros That Have Seen Early Success

What Marketers Can Learn About Chatbots From Pros That Have Seen Early Success | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Since Facebook and Kik debuted their chatbot channels last year, thousands of bots have been built by brands, media companies and developers on the platforms, with more expected in 2017. (Just last week, Facebook unveiled its Messenger 2.0, with brands like Subway, Aeromexico and Food Network coming onboard.)

However, while bots might seem like just another extension on social media, there is still a lot to figure out in terms of performance and measurement. And just like the early days of social media, understanding what clicks and what doesn’t is still a work in progress.

“When we were creating chatbots and thinking about it as a new medium, we wanted to go back to the drawing board to assess how these things should be measured,” said Kik product manager Laura Newton. “Although bots are still a niche product and aren’t super widespread, they cover a vast variety of use cases and we think they need to be treated different.”...
