Native English speakers are the world’s worst communicators

Native English speakers are the world’s worst communicators | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

When trying to communicate in English with a group of people with varying levels of fluency, it’s important to be receptive and adaptable, tuning your ears into a whole range of different ways of using English, Jenkins says.

“People who’ve learned other languages are good at doing that, but native speakers of English generally are monolingual and not very good at tuning in to language variation,” she says.

In meetings, Anglophones tend to speed along at what they consider a normal pace, and also rush to fill gaps in conversation, according to Steggles....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

In a room full of non-native speakers, ‘there isn’t any chance of understanding’. It might be their language, but the message is often lost.

The Art of Miscommunication: When Web Conferencing Goes Wrong

The Art of Miscommunication: When Web Conferencing Goes Wrong | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

As businesses lean more heavily on video conferencing, there is often a disconnect between what is communicated and how it is communicated. Things can occur over the course of a face-to-face conversation that can compromise the entire dialogue.

While the communicator's words and use of inflection are two of the more obvious things to pay attention to, often, however, the old adage rings true: actions speak louder than words. Micro-expressions unnecessarily shift the focus away from what’s being said to what’s being hinted. The following are some of the finer things to look for in your next video conference so that you can avoid all the inevitable awkward pauses....

How you can make great content in PR - Inside PR - PRmoment

How you can make great content in PR - Inside PR - PRmoment | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Attention! Here is an invaluable guide for creating content that gets noticed. So if you want to engage, enthral and entice, read on...

Tom Barton, UK head of communications at IT business and consulting services company Capgemini, says a question he is asked nearly every day is “Can you help us produce great content?”. His number one rule is to think about your audience. “Picture a person reading your writing and ask yourself who they are and what they want to know. It is unlikely they are going to be too dissimilar to you, so try to make it personal. Making it great is making sure it is useful to your reader. And for it to be useful, it must be clear and provide something practical to take away, whether food for thought, or a tip which can be implemented easily. It should also be unique – don’t write something that’s too similar to content found easily elsewhere.” To make sure your content is king, follow this expert guide....

I’m willing to be the Pope . . . if they are willing to make some changes | Steve Crescenzo

I’m willing to be the Pope . . . if they are willing to make some changes | Steve Crescenzo | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

It’s official. Just got the call from the Vatican. They want me to be the next Pope. I agreed, providing they make a few small changes to their doctrine. Ten tiny changes, to be exact:

1. Reverse their stance on gay people, and encourage people to be who they are. I figure they’ll go for this one, since many of their priests are gay.

2. Reverse their stance on birth control, so people in poor countries like Mexico don’t keep having kids they can’t afford, just so the Church can continue to grow. I checked the bible. Nothing in there about not wearing rubbers, so they should pass this one, too.

3. Reverse their stance on women not being allowed to be priests, because anything men can do, women can usually do better. The Democrats talked about the Republican War on Women, but that’s nothing compared to what the Catholic Church is doing to them....

You know what would be great? Some infographics. | Holtz Communications + Technology | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

There’s so much content crossing my feeds these days, I would welcome anything that might save me time while helping me grasp complex quantitative information. I wish more organizations would adopt infographics as a way to provide that ability to comprehend what data means in a glance.

What’s that you say? We’re swimming in oceans of infographics?

Not so, and the fact that just about everyone calls them infographics doesn’t make it so....

Conversation Agent: Curating Information as Content Strategy | Valeria Maltoni

Conversation Agent: Curating Information as Content Strategy | Valeria Maltoni | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...On the Web, people trade attention for good, useful content. So you need to have a plan that will help you develop, publish, and catalog content to make you more effective in attracting search and keeping people coming back to your source.

There are still companies that struggle with the idea of becoming content producers, and thus have not yet formulated a content strategy. It makes sense to have one because it helps you define why content is useful and usable, good for the bottom line and for instilling a sense of purpose -- for customers and business alike. Some organizations are affected by the sprawling issue when it comes to content. Separate groups that develop their own and don't necessarily map to the business' overall direction is one example. Others have the opposite problem -- too few resources means not enough content to start generating the search and participation volumes they need....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Great quote from Valeria Maltoni: "Content, which is anything that informs, educates, or entertain online, is your business digital body language. The Internet changed how people find and read content."

Entrepreneurs Who Master Storytelling Win More | Forbes

Entrepreneurs Who Master Storytelling Win More | Forbes | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The entrepreneur’s challenge is to effectively communicate their value proposition, not only to customers, but also to vendors, partners, investors, and their own team.

Especially for technical founders, this is normally all about presenting impressive facts. But in reality facts only go so far. Stories often work better, because humans don’t always make rational decisions. Most people care the most about the things that touch, move, and inspire them. They make decisions based on emotion, and then look for the facts that support these decisions.

Thus, it behooves every entrepreneur to learn how to craft stories from their personal experience and the world at large that make an emotional connection, as well as tie in the facts....

In my experience, the best leaders are usually the best communicators...
