Five Creative Ways Brands are Using Tumblr

Five Creative Ways Brands are Using Tumblr | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Tumblr takes a blog-plus-the-kitchen-sink approach to storytelling, meaning brands have the flexibility to create their own template and engage with fans in ways that best suit their mission. As the fastest-growing network of 2014, Tumblr and its 420 million users deserve a second look. (Note for your sales team: Tumblr users have higher median incomes than those of Pinterest or Twitter users.)

With that in mind, we consulted the Fortune 500 list to spotlight interesxxting ways major brands are engaging fans on the site. Consider how your brand might adopt one or more of these approaches as you read through the list...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

If you prefer your brand’s social media shaken, not stirred, consider using Tumblr.

Study: How Big Brands Are Using Tumblr

Study: How Big Brands Are Using Tumblr | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

While Tumblr now has over 100 million blogs, it is still the most overlooked social media network for brands. Currently, only 31% of the top 100 brands have adopted a Tumblr account. Social media analytics and reporting platform Simply Measured performed a study showing just how these top brands were performing and some of the tactics employed.

Of these 31 companies tracked, 21 were active in the past 30-day period (July 5th through August 4th). This places Tumblr as the sixth most popular social network behind Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest and Instagram.

Of the 21 active brands on Tumblr, 13 post 3+ times a week, 7 post daily (7+) and 6 posted more than 10 times a week.  Of the top brands active on Tumblr the average number of posts per day was 0.7 posts, with an average “note per post” of 1,462. The shelf-life on Tumblr engagement is much higher than other traditional social networks with 29% of reblogs occurring after the initial 30-day period. Even more, only 36% of reblogs happen on that same day, and posts will see 51% of total reblogs within the first week....

Tumblr has an immediacy that I like. It's so easy to make your Tumblr page interesting so it doesn't feel like the same level of "work" that blogging does.

The Media Companies Using Tumblr Right, According to Tumblr's Departing Media Evangelist | Ad Age

The Media Companies Using Tumblr Right, According to Tumblr's Departing Media Evangelist | Ad Age | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

What media companies are using tumblr right? we asked mark coatney, tumblr's departing media evangelist.

...When he left Newsweek to join Tumblr itself as its media evangelist in 2010, becoming just its 12th employee, Mr. Coatney took on introducing all kinds of companies to the fledgling platform and teaching them how to use it to better connect with their readers. By the time he decided to leave, Mr. Coatney had helped launch 650 Tumblrs for brands -- including nearly all of Conde Nast's Tumblrs -- as well as nonprofits, government organizations and individuals (like Beyonce).

This week, Mr. Coatney told readers of his personal Tumblr page that he was leaving, making him the second early employee to depart since Yahoo struck its $1.1 billion deal for the company...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Coatney cites these Tumblr media leaders: "BlackBook had a really good and interesting Tumblr and a series of good people doing it. Early on, the Conan O'Brien show -- in 2010 when his TBS show was starting -- did a Team Coco Tumblr that was really good and innovative. IBM Smarter Planet, which was up and running even before I started, is really cool. NPR and "Fresh Air" got it pretty early on. Rolling Stone was really great. Sesame Street was very, very good...."

Great read for SM, content, PR pros.

4 Things Marketers Should Know About Tumblr

4 Things Marketers Should Know About Tumblr | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

With 105 million blogs and 49 billion posts, Tumblr, the free blog hosting and social networking site, is the 32ndmost popular site in the world. So if you’re not using Tumblr as part of your marketing efforts, you’re missing a very large boat.

“Tumblr isn’t a blog platform like WordPress; it’s a social network that has a blogging platform.” says Neil Patel, co-founder of the Web analytics firm KISSmetrics. “The beautiful thing about Tumblr is that it makes it really easy to share your content with millions of Tumblr users… so you can get a big audience without spending a ton of money on marketing.” Here are Neil’s tips for marketing your business on Tumblr....

More Teens Use Tumblr than Facebook | MediaPost

More Teens Use Tumblr than Facebook | MediaPost | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Could Facebook ever go the way of MySpace? Given its ubiquity and continued growth around the world, that may seem unlikely, but here’s an interesting fact to consider: more 10th graders are using Tumblr than Facebook, according to a survey of 1,038 teens and young adults conducted by blogger and techie Garry Tan.

Tan used Survata to poll 546 teens ages 13-18 and 492 young adults ages 19-25 about their social media usage. Tan found that while 55% of the younger age group said they use Facebook, 61% said they use Tumblr. Meanwhile 22% said they use Twitter, 21% use Instagram, and 13% use Snapchat....

This was a really interesting stat and good reminder to consider the demographic differences between each social media channel you're considering as part of a program...

Is it a social network? Is it a blogging platform? No, it’s Tumblr! In our latest Engagement Checkup, we examine how brands are tapping into Tumblr’s unique content-centered community.

Nearly five-year-old Tumblr recently released its 2011 stats, and it’s looking like last year was the company’s best yet, with 900 percent global growth since 2010, mentions on both the Daily Show and Jeopardy and a ninth language (Polish) added to its repertoire.

Three brands raking in the leads with Tumblr | AGBeat

Three brands raking in the leads with Tumblr | AGBeat | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Tumblr is extremely popular among a younger demographic and it has the youngest average user-base of all social media sites. Seventy percent of users fall between the ages of 16 and 34, making many of Tumblr’s users Millennials. Millennials are known for being a difficult demographic to capture the interest of.

Tumblr is a great way to target Millennials, however it may be a difficult platform to master if you are unfamiliar with it. Yahoo purchased the company last year and Yahoo chief Marissa Mayer projected that it is likely to make more than $100 million in 2015. “More than 260 of the world’s top brands have a Tumblr presence,” Mayer said...

How To Use Tumblr To Complement Your WordPress Blog

How To Use Tumblr To Complement Your WordPress Blog | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Tumblr or WordPress is one of the most frequently asked questions for people that are starting to get into blogging. Recently my opinion on this choice has changed to not being a choice at all. Instead of choosing one over the other, I now prefer to use both in a way that they compliment each other.

So how and why can we use both of them at the same time you may be asking. Use wordpress.org as your main blog that you completely control with your own domain name, nice design and all the other things that WordPress does very well. Many consider Tumblr not a blogging platform at all but more of a social network so in this case I aim to get the most out of Tumblr’s social properties. If you currently blog on Tumblr and are looking to switch to WordPress this is the guide that you need.

How to use TumblrInstead of using Tumblr as my main platform for a blog I only post excerpts, pics and links back to the main blog there. This is a nice way of keeping the benefits of Tumblr social network features to drive attention and traffic to your blog while getting all the good stuff from WordPress like complete ownership and control over the look and feel of your site....

Here's a smart blogging strategy... Combine WordPress with Tumblr.

3 Tips for Successful Content Marketing on Tumblr | Business 2 Community | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...Regardless of what happens to the newly acquired platform from an advertising and financial standpoint, Tumblr will surely place a priority on retaining its viability as a content channel through which brands can tell a story and connect with consumers.

That’s what Tumblr’s all about: It’s a place to showcase content, and a place to share it. It’s a virtual display case for creative types, and an ever-expanding catalogue of visual art. Tumblr’s users know good photos, animated GIFs, and blog posts when they see them, and won’t hesitate to broadcast your content far and wide — if you can master the platform to ensure your branded work is what they’re looking for....

5 Brands Using Tumblr Effectively

5 Brands Using Tumblr Effectively | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

It may not seem as glamorous as big networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, but with over 50 million users and 20 billion posts, it is unwise to overlook Tumblr as an effective medium for brands. On the surface, one might assume that Tumblr is just a place for One Direction fangirls to share each other’s crushes through reblogs and likes.

The channel catches a lot of flack for not creating much unique content (it is trying to remedy this perception through the creative collaboration that is Reblorg), but it is actually a thriving community. Tumblr reaches a much larger demographic than you might imagine, as seen in Ignite Social Media’s 2012 Social Network Analysis. Many brands are utilizing the channel with incredible effectiveness, possibly implying that more brands should follow suit.

Before we start listing off some spectacular branded Tumblr blogs, there are a few things you should know about the platform....

Tumblr’s Continued Growth Makes It a Search Factor

Tumblr’s Continued Growth Makes It a Search Factor | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Has Tumblr become a part of your corporate publishing strategy? At one point, as Twitter and Facebook took off, it seemed that this “blog-network” platform (my term for something that isn’t as full-featured as WordPress or other software but definitely more feature-filled than a true social network) was going to be overshadowed by those ascendant networks.

But in the last year or so Tumblr has staged a remarkable comeback, despite – maybe even because of – a handful of direct competitors that sought to fill the “just let me post something quickly to my friends” space.

comScore recently released a study showing total unique visitors to Tumblr.com have grown significantly in the last year while the growth on mobile, which is a big way people consume and interact with those they follow, has grown even more sharply. And the number of clicks to Tumblr sites that are happening through search is even greater....
