Have Media Habits Changed Among Millennials and Teens? - eMarketer

Have Media Habits Changed Among Millennials and Teens? - eMarketer | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Both the younger and older groups were considerably more likely to say they were spending more time streaming full-length TV shows and movies, and similar percentages said they were spending more time with short online video.

But the amplified video viewing didn’t necessarily mean they were watching less TV. Among the younger group, 40% said they were watching the same amount of TV as last year, while 35% said they were watching at least a bit less and 25% were watching at least a bit more. The older users (ages 18 to 34) were more likely to say they were watching more TV.

The study found that younger internet users are shifting away from text-based types like blogs and publisher sites....

Where We Are: The 2017 State of Content Marketing | HubSpot | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

"Less than 10% of those surveyed were definitely sure how to implement content marketing." Sound familiar?

If it does, you're clearly not alone. Content marketing -- and keeping up with it -- can be confusing, even to those who understand its importance. Many of us have heard the phrase "content is king." But what, exactly, does that look like here and now, in such a rapidly changing landscape?

We grabbed that opening statistic from the helpful, intriguing infographic below, compiled by Zazzle, based on the results of its 2017 State of Content Marketing Survey of marketers in the UK. But instead of simply looking at the latest trends, it sought to examine the pain points and decision-making process of today's content marketer. And if you're in the business of making life easier for that audience -- well, we suggest having a look.

Do you think the same trends hold true in your neck of the woods? Read on, and see where your current strategy and priorities align with the data illustrated here....

All the Mistakes You Might Be Making on Social Media

All the Mistakes You Might Be Making on Social Media | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

If there's something that the early days of social media--circa 1990's and early 2000's with AOL and MySpace followed by the rise of Facebook--taught me, it's that people control the medium while brands merely ride the wave until the next new channel comes along.

Successful brands and influencers find that by building communities of advocates on the platforms where their audiences live, they're able to maintain such relevancy provided that they also evolve with their audience and platforms. However, social media can be a waste of time for you and your business if you're not strategically positioning your marketing efforts around industry trends.

Below are five reasons brand engagement is declining online, and what you can do about it....

Here’s the secret to making things popular (hint: It’s not ‘going viral’)

Here’s the secret to making things popular (hint: It’s not ‘going viral’) | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

In his new book “Hit Makers: The Science of Popularity in the Age of Distraction,” Derek Thompson busts some big myths about how popular stuff gets popular. Myths like: “Content is king,” i.e., good stuff rises to the top because it’s good.“

Distribution is more important” than content, Thompson said on the latest episode of Recode Media with Peter Kafka. “You can say that a song is the best song in the world, you can say that an idea is the best for people’s welfare, or a movie is the best documentary of its kind. But without a distribution strategy to reach people, nobody hears it.”

Thompson, a senior editor at the Atlantic, challenged the idea — popularized by other pop-sociology writers like Malcolm Gladwell — that ideas can go viral, spreading and reproducing in a biological way. Instead, he said, everything from memes to tech companies can “piggyback” on existing social networks....

The Most Engaging Brand Content of 2016, Month by Month

The Most Engaging Brand Content of 2016, Month by Month | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

In 2015, there was a marked increase in the popularity of brand videos on YouTube. In 2016, brands took social video storytelling to another level, not only on YouTube, but on Facebook and Instagram as well, and were rewarded for their efforts.

That’s according to social media analytics company Unmetric, which tracked social campaigns throughout the year as it did in 2015 to determine which ones performed best in terms of engagement.

"Videos have moved from being just reposts of 30-second TV spots to long-form storytelling, with the popular Nike Football post being nearly six minutes long," Unmetric CEO and co-founder Lux Narayan told Adweek. "This year really showed that there's an appetite and attention span for longer branded content if it's authentic and tells a story that resonates well with people, not merely as consumers but universally as humans."

Unmetric studies Twitter, Facebook and Instagram data to determine an engagement score for brand posts of zero to 1,000. The engagement score is a weighted measurement based on the idea that some metrics like shares and retweets have more value for brands than others such as likes and favorites. For YouTube, the company uses a different method for measuring the successfulness of a campaign. There is no engagement score, but likes and how quickly a video accumulates them are important factors. It also uses a combination of its own algorithms and human insights to determine overall engagement....

5 Ecommerce Content Marketing Trends for 2017

5 Ecommerce Content Marketing Trends for 2017 | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

In 2017, content will continue to be one of the most important marketing tactics for ecommerce businesses. Look for content marketers to produce a greater number of videos, focus on mobile media consumption, spend more money promoting content, produce more shows rather than standalone posts, and use technology to an advantage.

Content marketing is the act of creating, distributing, and promoting content, such as blog posts, articles, podcasts, and videos with the aim of attracting, engaging, and retaining customers. For ecommerce marketers, content can be a way of building a relationship with a shopper, which in turn will allow an online store to compete not on price or delivery speed, but on experience.

Marketers understand that they need to provide tangible value in their customers’ lives, and content is one of the last mediums left to effectively do this. How to Get into Google News - Neil Patel

You don’t have to wait months or years to get high rankings in Google. Through Google News, you can instantly shoot up to page 1 of Google.

Now Google already gives you a set of guidelines, but here is what I found is effective:

1. You have to write news worthy content – if you are struggling to find news content you can go to Google Trends or any popular news site to see what’s hot.

2. Create a Google News Sitemap – through the Yoast SEO plugin you can create a sitemap. This way when you have news worthy content they will pick it up faster.

3. Your URL structure has to be unique – if you don’t have news related keywords within your URL you are less likely to rank. By having specific keywords you will shoot up to the top for news related queries.

In addition to that, follow the guidelines Google News gives and you will be fine.

Google wants only the most naturally popular sites to show up in the SERPs. And that’s why it is extremely necessary to have brand mentions.

If people are talking about your brand, Google will see those mentions as implied links and enhance your SEO.

The Difference Between Content Marketing and Social Marketing | Simply Measured

The Difference Between Content Marketing and Social Marketing | Simply Measured | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

With the caveat in the section above–that we’re often doing a little of both–and some informal polling of many esteemed marketers I know, here is where I’ve landed on social marketing vs. content marketing.

Social marketing is a channel where we find potential customers by listening to earned conversations and analyzing our owned accounts. We then interact with those people to move them through the customer journey.

You can use various tactics to make that movement happen. Content marketing is a tactic. It’s a method of marketing that allows companies to add value for potential customers by creating and distributing (sometimes through social) collateral like blog posts, videos, and web pages.

These pieces of collateral entertain and educate your target audience about topics related to your product. They’re intended to generate interest in your offering by reinforcing relevant problems, challenges, misconceptions, and, finally, solutions....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

What's the difference between content marketing and social marketing? Is it that content marketing focuses on content production and creative thought, while social media marketing handles distribution? Depends!

The Best Publishers On Facebook and Instagram in 2016 | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

W2After yesterday’s look at the best brands on social media, we rank the best publishers on Facebook and Instagram in 2016.

As we noted on the blog last week, 2016 has been a fairly turbulent year for publishers on Facebook. While engagement and use of social media generally has never been so high, publishers found it a little harder to get noticed in news feeds, and were asked questions about the relationship between their social presence and their own websites.

Despite that, there have been lots of great examples of publishers engaging with their readers (and viewers) in imaginative and innovative ways.

We didn’t pick these publishers on the basis of overall engagement alone. While consistently high engagement was a factor in deciding the winners, we looked for an overall pattern of content format experimentation and success....
