Why Google Home is spreading a fake story about Barack Obama plotting a coup

Why Google Home is spreading a fake story about Barack Obama plotting a coup | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

When Twitter user Rory Cellan-Jones asked Google Home if Barack Obama is planning a coup, the digital assistant device responded by detailing a bogus conspiracy theory about the former president plotting a communist scheme to take over the government.

"According to details exposed in Western Centre for Journalism's exclusive video, not only could Obama be in bed with the communist Chinese, but Obama may in fact be planning a communist coup d'état at the end of his term in 2016," the smart home device's robotic voice explained, though it stumbled over the word "d'etat."

But this outlandish response isn't restricted to Google Home. Rather, it highlights a problem with how the search engine responds to queries in the form of "featured snippets" — short, direct answers highlighted at the top of its search results....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

This is a fascinating story and post about search algorithms, fake news and the importance of being earnest in your online research. Highly recommended reading. 9.5/10

‘Did this thing ignite cancer in me?’ Early death for 9/11’s Dust Lady, age 42

‘Did this thing ignite cancer in me?’ Early death for 9/11’s Dust Lady, age 42 | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
An American woman whose traumatized, dust-covered face summed up the horrors of the September 11 attacks has died of stomach cancer at the age of 42.

Marcy Borders, known as “The Dust Lady” thanks to the photograph taken in the immediate aftermath, became one of the most recognizable survivors. She had started work at Bank of America a month before the attack, and was working on the 81st floor of World Trade Centre when the first plane hit.

She managed to make it down to the ground level and was walking away when the second plane struck the tower, leaving her covered from head to foot in thick grey dust.
Jeff Domansky's insight:

As the anniversary of 9/11 approaches, this photo brings back powerful memories and reflections.

The Problem With This Magazine Cover

The Problem With This Magazine Cover | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Ethical journalism is all about not being inconsiderate, insensitive and immoral....

A state of incredulity took over me as I viewed this disgraceful work, glorifying the man who made a tragic mark on the lives of so many Bostonians. While the citizens of Boston are definitely Boston Strong, the city still feels the aftermath of this event every day....

When the picture was released on the magazine's Facebook page, comments started pouring in attacking the decision to highlight a bombing suspect like he was a rock star. Among the remarks were comments on how long time subscribers were planning to unsubscribe, and a Do Something petition to have this cover replaced....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Teen writer's impressive critique of Rolling Stone and media. Recommended reading!

Here at Co.Design, we cover photography that transports you to other places and offers fresh perspectives on the built environment. We've talked to photographers who have spent years documenting their subjects, traveling the world or assimilating to a subculture so they could show it to us.

They've captured grown women who mother hyperrealistic dolls, mysterious "geoglyphs" discovered in Kazakhstan, and alleyways in Hong Kong that double as storage units. Their images prove that despite an onslaught of technological advances aimed at rethinking visual narratives, good old-fashioned photography remains one of the most powerful tools for telling stories. Here, we give you our favorite photo essays from 2015....

“If we run and they kill us, so be it. But we have to run now.” | Matter | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Six months ago, 276 Nigerian schoolgirls were kidnapped by Boko Haram. The handful who escaped that night have never told the full story of their ordeal — until now.Near the classrooms in the dusty schoolyard of the Chibok Government Secondary School, the Whuntaku girls hold court beneath the green lele mazza tree. There is no sign on the tree, no discernible markings; everyone just knows it’s their spot — where they gathered in the mornings, between classes, and after school to hang out, talk about boys, whatever....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

The kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls tell their story for the first time. This is a powerful story that must be read and remembered. 10/10
