Using NewsWhip Analytics, we found the top 10 stories from five of our top 10 Facebook publishers in December 2016. NewsWhip Analytics can give data on hundreds of stories from different publishers over various time periods, allowing audience development and analytics teams to perform in-depth analysis on their most successful content.

We ranked the stories by total engagements they received on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest, and then calculated the average word count for the top ten stories. We didn’t include headlines, subheadings, pull quotes, or calls to action within the story (‘Read More’, ‘Scroll down for video’ etc) in the word count.

Here’s what the average length of the top ten most engaged stories from five top publishers were in December....

Traditional journalists probably won't like a lot of how Upworthy's become one of the fastest growing aggregators on the web. But it's hard to question the effectiveness of its methods.


Back in November, the Lab’s own Adrienne LaFrance wrote a number of words about Upworthy, a social packaging and not-quite-news site that has become remarkably successful at making “meaningful content” go viral. She delved into their obsession with testing headlines, their commitment to things that matter, their aggressive pushes across social media, and their commitment to finding stories with emotional resonance.


Things have continued to go well for Upworthy — they’re up to 10 million monthly uniques from 7.5. At the Personal Democracy Forum in New York, editorial director Sara Critchfield shared what she sees as Upworthy’s secret sauce for shareability, namely, seeking out content that generates a significant emotional response from both the reader and the writer....

Last Saturday I had the honor of teaching at a public writing conference at The Washington Post. After I finished my part of the program, I spent the day listening carefully to four of the Post’s most accomplished writers and reporters: David Finkel, Bob Woodward, DeNeen L. Brown, and Ezra Klein.

 

I took copious notes, wrote down anything that struck me as wise or useful, and want to share with you what I learned from them. Please don’t take these as direct quotations, but as handwritten paraphrases containing the gist of their advice. Particularly notable were the shared values of craft and sense of mission and purpose in a gang of four that ranged from the 70-year-old Woodward, still cranking out books, to the young phenom Ezra Klein, who is trying to re-invent how to make policy stories interesting and relevant. I’ll take them in the order of their presentations...

Tools created by the US lab set up to promote quality journalism and storytelling...


Based at Northwestern University and funded by the Knight Foundation, the lab consists of a team of technologists and journalists "working at advancing news media innovation through exploration and experimentation", its website explains.


The lab "develops prototypes, projects and services that help make information meaningful, promote quality journalism, storytelling and content on the internet". On Monday evening, Mulligan shared four tools created by the lab with Hacks/Hackers London, a meet up of journalists and technologists....

The Data Journalism Awards (DJA) is the prime international competition recognizing outstanding work in the field of data journalism. Sponsored by Google, the DJA 2013 received over 300 applications from all over the world, ranging from major media groups, regional newspapers, and research groups, and the winners were just announced at the award ceremony held at the Global Editors Network News Summit.


This year, the DTJ had four categories: Data-driven investigative journalism, Data-driven applications, Storytelling with data, and Data journalism website or section, as well as a special “Public Choice Award”. And here are the winners, as they were announced on Twitter by the organization (@EditorsNet)...
