Meltwater runs something very much akin to Google Alerts, or a clippings service if you prefer. AP claimed that the excerpts which it took from AP’s work were too large to qualify under fair use. And the judge agreed with AP...

The news that Google is shutting down Google Reader on July 1 of this year shook the Internet to its core this week. For many, it is the go-to feed aggregator that made looking deep into the heart of the online world possible from one window, and the news of its demise has us wondering what we'll do next. What next? How about dumping Google Reader and switching to Feedly? In fact, a half-million people already switched in only two days.

 

Having a sudden influx of 500,000 new users can be a lot to handle for any site, but Feedly seems willing to meet the challenges needed to greet lost Googlers with open arms. In a blog post, a Feedly blogger said the company is committed to keeping the site up and running despite the big jump in numbers.

Feedly isn't content to continue existing while hundreds of thousands of new users flock to its shores.

"Bit.ly announced a new set of APIs named Social Data APIs.

The new APIs allow you to search for top stories in real time over the Bit.ly URL network. You can quickly see the top URLs and stories for any specific query right now, in real time.

 

The three types of functions include:

1) True Realtime Search: Search for top stories and URLs in real time by query and geographic area.

2) Attention Spikes: This doesn’t require you to search by keyword, instead the “bursts API” returns the current phrases that are receiving a burst in attention beyond what we would expect.

3) Metadata about URLs: Bit.ly will provide the metadata on URLs based off of keywords, topics, content, language, and location relevance..."...

A new report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism provides further evidence of how social media is shaping news consumption.


The survey of online news consumers across five countries – UK, US, Germany, France and Denmark – found that social media is starting to challenge search engines as a primary way of finding news.
In the UK, 30% find the news through search, compared to 20% who come across the news on Facebook or Twitter.


But the study found a significant generational difference in news discovery. Young people (43%) are far more likely to find the news through their social circles.


However, not all sharing is equal. Digging into the data, the study discovered that there was a core of heavy news consumers who have a disproportionate influence on the sharing of news....

These days you tend to hear about Russia in terms of its government hacking the US election. But some canny Russian developers have put their skills to something more productive: monitoring the TV appearances of world leaders.

A team of Russian developers have released an AI powered algorithm that tracks all world leaders activities in all media. Based on the information the Verso service analyzes the impact of each President/Prime Minister and shows a rating for them in real-time.

Verso is an experiment to utilise algorithms designed to rapidly recognise faces (even blurry ones) which were developed at Moscow State University,

Once a second the Verso platform takes a screenshot of a set of monitored TC channels. All the faces it detects are run through the computer vision processing, to see if there is one which matches the person the researchers are searching for.

The algorithms it uses are able to tell in milliseconds if a person is at least a 99% match, even with blurred or turned heads. The data it delivers to its site is in real-time....

Reports on traditional news outlets, such as print and broadcast struggling to be financially viable. are nothing new. In a previous blog post, I quoted a statistic from IBM that claimed 90 per cent of all data has been created in the last two years alone.


With the rise of social media and the ability for anyone with access to a computer to create a blog, the supply of possible news sources has exploded since the web gained mainstream acceptance years ago.

The public’s demand for content and news has dramatically increased. However, the exponential growth in supply of news sources such as social media, 24-hour news channels, and everything in between, has created a glut of information effectively driving down the value of real news. This is essentially a supply-and-demand problem. Combined with disruptive technology and better methodologies for advertising, traditional media outlets have been forced to make changes to the ways in which they report and monetize news content....

The news that Google will be retiring its Reader service has been met with criticism by many circles. A dedicated fan base has been left out in the cold and have been given three months to now look for an alternative service.

 

... Before you start looking, you should first download your Google Reader data from Takeout. By following the link here, you can download all your data on a handy xml file. Google says that it should be easily transferable to alternative services, but that really depends on whether said services are allowing users to do this. Some like Feedly already do, but other services will quickly follow suit. Even if you don’t use the file straight away, it’s handy to have for future reference....

Tech site develops predictive platform to monetize traffic surges

 

In an analytics-obsessed Web climate, everyone is chasing the big story. The problem is, more often than not, big breakout traffic scoops yield attention, eyeballs and notoriety, but very few dollars. Last month, Deadspin broke the story on the Manti Te’o girlfriend hoax, netting the site nearly 4 million pageviews. But as Gawker Media mentioned publicly following the story, the company had no technical solution in place to monetize an unforeseen surge in traffic.

 

Gawker is not alone. Web publishers have struggled across the board with this, which is why Ars Technica has been hard at work with what could be a viable solution.

 

At Ars Technica, Condé Nast’s 15-year-old high-brow tech site, Ken Fisher and his small in-house team were lamenting the traffic conundrum when they decided to build a real-time dashboard geared toward examining pageviews with a predictive eye toward recently posted articles that are poised to trend.

"Within two days we found it was working really well," explained Ars editor in chief Fisher. “We were identifying within an hour stories that would go on to do 900,000 views. And these were not pieces you’d hear by title and think, ‘That’s going to be killer.’ One was titled, Quantum Networks May Be More Realistic Than We Thought.”...
