Using Selfies in Social Media Marketing | Social Media Today

Using Selfies in Social Media Marketing | Social Media Today | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...If you look up ‘#selfie’ on Instagram you’ll be bombarded with millions of matches to scan through – more than 88 millionto be precise. Everywhere you go you’ll see people, arm stretched out in front, hand hooked round their phone, pouting and flashing peace signs. It’s become so normal that no one even looks twice anymore, there’s a general understanding of the selfie process. And with so many selfies being taken, it’s a no-brainer for brands think about how they can utilise that trend for exposure. And many have already done just that.

Brands and Selfies

There are already a raft of examples of brands building campaigns around selfies, some successfully, others not so much. As with any trend, businesses will seek to access a ready-made audience, but it also takes a level of comprehension on how best to do so – as with all aspects of social media, understanding your audience is critical to success. There is definitely opportunity within the selfie trend, but brands have to establish the best way to realise it, what will resonate with your target consumers. This requires listening, monitoring trends to know what your audience will and won’t engage with. But it also necessitates an understanding of the psychology of selfies, of why people engage in this activity in the first place.

Samsung Told The Selfie Stops At The President | MediaPost

Samsung Told The Selfie Stops At The President | MediaPost | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Samsung may be learning a lesson this week that most of us observed by watching Mr. Smith a long time ago: What flies in Hollywood doesn’t having any relation to the real politick of Washington, D.C. And so it is that headlines are calling out both Samsung and Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz for “punking” the President with a moment reminiscent of Ellen DeGeneres’ selfie-fulfilling prophecy at the Oscars that did, indeed, set a record for the most retweets....

Selfies on a Stick, and the Social-Content Challenge for the Media | NY Times

Selfies on a Stick, and the Social-Content Challenge for the Media | NY Times | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Sometimes you don’t need an analyst’s report to get a look at the future of the media industry and the challenges it will bring.

On New Year’s Eve, I was one of the poor souls working in Times Square. By about 1 p.m., it was time to evacuate, and when I stepped into the cold that would assault the huddled, partying masses that night, a couple was getting ready to pose for a photo with the logo on The New York Times Building in the background. I love that I work at a place that people deem worthy of memorializing, and I often offer to help.

My assistance was not required. As I watched, the young couple mounted their phone on a collapsible pole, then extended it outward, the camera now able to capture the moment in wide-screen glory. I’d seen the same phenomenon when I was touring the Colosseum in Rome last month....

In Indonesia, this was popular since early 2014, and we called it "tongsis"

Jossie Orense's curator insight, May 16, 2015 7:26 PM

With all the people taking selfies, media analysts are beginning to wonder about their job security in reporting events. Anyone with a smartphone can easily record what's going on faster than summoning a reporter to report on it. Indeed this is true, however, I think that credible sources are needed to report accurate news.

Wild Apricot Blog : “Selfie” Generation Wants to See Your Stories

Wild Apricot Blog : “Selfie” Generation Wants to See Your Stories | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...According to Ben Baker (npEngage), “1.1 posts including the hashtag “#selfie” were uploaded to Instagram every single second, that means 4,000 were uploaded per hour, 95,700 were uploaded per day, and a whopping 34,924,648 were uploaded across the entirety of 2013.”

1.1 per second! And of course, that's just the photos that were tagged and uploaded to Instagram, never mind all those shared on Facebook, Snapchat, etc.

Understanding how this impacts your communications

So why should we care that an entire generation (and many of us older folks too) are taking "selfies"? As Baker suggests in his post, while the “selfie” trend might fade away, it offers some insight into an entire generation of Millennials – their social media habits and more generally, the ways they prefer to connect and be communicated with....

Twitter's Oscars stats: 3.3B tweets viewed worldwide, reaching 37M people

Twitter's Oscars stats: 3.3B tweets viewed worldwide, reaching 37M people | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

No matter what you think of Ellen’s selfie, it’s hard to deny the impact the Oscars had on Twitter this year.

Twitter revealed this morning that tweets about the Oscars were viewed more than 3.3 billion times between 5 p.m. Eastern on Sunday and 5 a.m. Monday morning. But perhaps even more impressively, Twitter notes that those tweets reached 37 million people overall — not too far from the 43 million people who watched the show on ABC.

The usefulness of Twitter during live events isn’t anything new — rather than sitting back and consuming content, Twitter lets you become an active participant. But while Twitter’s viewership is steadily increasing, the number of people sending tweets is still significantly lower. When it comes to the Oscars, Twitter says only 5 million people actually sent tweets related to the event....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

The reach, the power and the glory of Twitter demonstrated Oscar night. A cornball stunt by Ellen but her selfie has gone viral.
