Why images might be ruining your website - The Creative Edge

Why images might be ruining your website - The Creative Edge | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Fun fact of the day: the human brain processes imagery 60,000 times faster than text. Despite this, we’re still seeing lots of professional sites whose only image content is their header and ads.

Visual spectacles like Tumblr and Pinterest are simply taking advantage of how the human brain works, making them not only extremely popular but also significantly more engaging than your average blog.

Don’t get me wrong, people are clearly using visual elements. The larger problem is that a lot of people aren’t investing in their image content because they either think their copy is good enough or they really don’t realize they’re costing their site.

Finding the best visual content for your site starts with understanding how powerful an image is, acknowledging your mistakes and finally moving in the direction to make better image choices....

This article discusses the seven ways to have the perfect content in a photo on social networks. The first of the seven ways is that one picture will not always work on every form of social media. Images with certain colors have different reactions on different mediums of social media. The next way to have the perfect content in a photo on social networks is to make the photo personal. Pictures that trigger emotions catch the viewers. The third way is to embrace the text. This means that a company should try to include text on the image. The fourth way is to use action shots. Show “what is happening now, or what will be happening soon”. The fifth way is to include not only images in posts, but also GIFs. The sixth way is to make sure you include images that you find from other websites. And lastly, use multiple images.

Recently I believe that more companies are trying to steer away from wordy posts on social media. This article would be really helpful for companies who are new to posting pictures online. Because viewers scroll quickly through their social media feeds, it is important to have posts that are eye catching. This article gives companies a checklist of effective images to have on their social medias.

Great article scooped by Jeff Domansky on top tips for creating images for your social content. One tip in particular resonated with me - the psychology of colours ; it is noted in the article that red/orange images receive double the amount of clicks as blue/green images on social media channels. Something worth bearing in mind if you want to optimise your engagement with fans/followers on social media through images. Another good tip related to including text on images to drive your brand's message home and including some text in larger font than others for emphasis -  a great iOS app for doing this is Wordswag.

It’s said (though we not sure by whom) that we process visuals 60,000 times faster than text.

Another number that illustrates how fast we comprehend images is this:MIT neuroscientists report that the brain can identify images seen for as little as 13 milliseconds.

That’s quicker than a blink of an eye. (The normal length of a blink is 300-400 milliseconds)

If you add contest regularly people will be looking on your page more often. It doesn't have to be a big prize but if you give away something that will get peoples attention. Also I really like the idea of using direct (private) messaging. This makes followers feel like they have a part in the company. That is very important because it makes them feel special and it helps you stand out from other companies.

Visual Content: The Key to Effective Brand Storytelling

Visual Content: The Key to Effective Brand Storytelling | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...In his book Visual Impact Visual Teaching, Timothy Gangwer cites evidence that 90 percent of all data that the brain processes is visual. Additionally, it’s commonly held that 65 percent of people are visual learners, and the human brain purportedly processes visualization 60,000 times faster that it does written content.

However, when you think about it, the fact that we are visual learners first and foremost makes perfect sense from an evolutionary standpoint. Human beings were able to articulate thoughts through visuals long before the invention of the written word. People love visual content, and the more enriching the content, the deeper and more impactful the impression that your content will make. Additionally, given the fact that your average user will only give you about 10 to 20 seconds worth of a page visit to make an impact with your content, it follows that you had best make every single solitary second count.

But don’t take my word for it. In fact, don’t even take the word of these scientists, with all their “super-sciency-sounding” percentages and numbers. Let’s listen to the people themselves....

Jeff Domansky's insight:
