Know Your Poe: Remembering Edgar Allan Poe on His 205th Birthday | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Happy 205th birthday, Edgar Allan Poe! The great creator of "The Raven," while a master of the macabre, did not only dabble in dark tales.

Today we're hosting an early celebration of the birth of legendary writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe, born January 19, 1809. He is well-known, largely thanks to his immortal poem "The Raven" and other horrifying works of short fiction like "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Fall of the House of Usher."

But Poe was more than just a horror author.Poe dabbled in a variety of literary styles and genres during his short career. His "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym" and "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" both draw inspiration from the science of his day and could be considered early works of science fiction. He is also considered the father of the detective story. The scientific A-Team saving the world from killer viruses, rogue AI and the paperclip apocalypse | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

They don't look like Guardians Of The Galaxy-style superheroes.

... The porter's lodge is like an airlock, apparently sealed from the tribulations of everyday life. But inside the college, pacing the flagstones of what is called – all modesty aside – Great Court, are four men who do not take it for granted that those undergraduates actually have a future. They are the four founders of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER), and they are in the business of "horizon scanning". Together, they are on alert for what they sometimes call "low-probability-but-high-consequence events", and sometimes – when they forget to be reassuring – "catastrophe"....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Guardian profile of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) and its founders is highly recommended reading for those who love Futurism, science fiction and plain old good reporting and storytelling.. Recommended reading 11/10 ;-)

Superb writing tips.

Bright Medusa's curator insight, January 22, 2014 11:38 AM

The best piece of advice to just get started is to just get started. I (and many other novice writers) fear not getting it perfect out of the gate. There’s a nugget of wisdom in only commiting to do the first 80% of the writing. That is, get it about 80% of the way there. The first draft. Unpretty. Unpolished. Then pass it to someone you trust for edits and critiques. This helps keep momentum going and prevents you from getting stuck, unsure how to pull it together or finish it up.
