11 lessons from a site launch - Online News Association | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
The Online News Association is a non-profit membership organization for digital journalists.

Last week, Chris and I presented Homicide Watch at ONA’s DC meetup. You can watch the video here. In it, we discuss a lot of the technical and editorial specifics of what we do every day.

Our kicker from the presentation is the subject of this blog post (minute 35 on the video). These 11 “lessons learned” are meant to be somewhat inspirational, both for those going it alone, like I am, and for those in traditional settings.

I expand on each below...

Business Blog Post Ideas and Planning | Soshable

Business Blog Post Ideas and Planning | Soshable | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

In business, there is no such thing as writer’s block. It doesn’t exist. Erase the phrase from your mind. You see, in any business, there are so many potential stories to be told that one should never run out of them even if they’re blogging daily. More importantly, this isn’t like writing a novel. It’s not professional journalism. You’re not writing a column. On a business blog, you have the freedom to pull from the ultimate content resource – the internet.

What most perceive as writer’s block in the world of business blogging is actually the brain’s way of saying that you don’t want to write at this moment. Get over it.

With that all out of the way, it’s time to look at some different types of blog posts that can be categorized into a proper plan. This plan can be an editorial calendar, a series of reminders in Outlook, or a notepad on your desk where you jot down your ideas. We’ll get into planning in a moment, but first let’s look at some of the ideas themselves.,,,

From Blog to Vlog - How to Turn Written Blog Posts into Video Blog Posts | The Future of Ink

From Blog to Vlog - How to Turn Written Blog Posts into Video Blog Posts | The Future of Ink | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

If you’d like tocreate more video content, but you’re not sure where to start, the answer may be as close as your blog.  Repurposing written content from your blog may be one of the quickest and easiest ways to produce video.  After all, the idea is already there – all you have to do is alter the platform!

There are many compelling reasons to go from blog to vlog: First, you’re giving your followersanother way to consume your content.  In our TV-driven society, many people would rather watch than read.

You can also argue that video content is more engaging, compelling and memorable than text alone.  With video, you can bring your blog posts to life and make them more personal.

So if a picture is worth a thousand words, what’s a video worth?  A minute of video is worth 1.8 million words, according to D. James McQuivey of Forrester Research.  That’s a lot of written blog posts!

Now let’s turn some of those words into videos. Here are a few ways to get started:...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Lou Burtone shares some really useful tips on converting your web blog into a video blog. Of particular note are several of the video tools he suggests.

Step one for using Twitter as a reporter: Master advanced search | Steve Buttry | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Every reporter should be a frequent user of Twitter’s advanced search function. I spent some time on the phone recently with a veteran reporter wanting some help in using Twitter effectively ...

Every reporter should be a frequent user of Twitter’s advanced search function.

I’ve published lots of Twitter tips for journalists before and compiled resources for journalists using Twitter. Those extensive lists might be a little overwhelming, though, if you’re just getting started in Twitter and lacking confidence.

I’m going to take a different approach now, explaining one Twitter tip at a time, suggesting that reporters master a different tool or technique each week (or so; no promise that I’ll be able to hold to a weekly schedule).
