Relevant Content: Driving the Kraft Marketing Engine

Relevant Content: Driving the Kraft Marketing Engine | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

With so many channels and the marginal cost of the creation and distribution of content, brands today are struggling to communicate with an increasingly fragmented audience.

“Consumer attention is ephemeral and is exponentially fleeting,” said Julie Fleishman (@jfly) of Kraft Foods in her Content Marketing World keynote.

What will save our brands?  According to Fleishman, the answer is content. “It’s an invitation to engage. It’s not intrusive and invites the consumer in.”

Content signals “I know you, you know me,” and creates trust, demonstrating shared interests. And in today’s digital environment, content is self-targeting, through search engines and social recommendations.

For these reasons, content is at the center of the Kraft Foods marketing engine....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Two further superb content marketing quotes from Fleishman:

"Done is better than perfect."

“Learn. Create. Deliver. Measure. Learn."

The Future of Social Media Content Strategy is Really Déjà Vu

The Future of Social Media Content Strategy is Really Déjà Vu | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...Articles that attempt to predict the future of social media make for great link bait. We’re all desperate to avoid some shiny new toy eroding our advantage or destroying all our hard work. That’s why most of these articles focus on the new technologies of the day, written in a tone that implies an impending threat if the reader doesn’t adapt quickly enough.

Facebook buys virtual reality company Oculus, so the future of social media must involve virtual reality (VR). Pinterest stuns everyone with its rapid rise, so the future of social media must have more pictures.

These aren’t predictions of the future. They’re merely reactions to whatever is happening at the time....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Yes, content marketing is hard work, but so is getting out of bed in the morning. Keep calm and carry on.

Why We Should Take the Brand out of Branded Content

Why We Should Take the Brand out of Branded Content | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Could you describe the company you work for to a potential client in a hundred words? How many words would you have left if you deleted references to your company name, any of your brand names, and all the superlatives you’ve used? What remains is what I call independent content — a good story that’s authentic, focused, and relevant. It’s exactly what good content marketing should be.

It’s easier said than done, of course. Legions of marketing and communication professionals had their training during the era of mass communication, resulting in the belief that the best way to attract attention is to talk long and hard about themselves. This approach is frowned upon in content marketing.

As Garret Moon says, “Using content marketing to sell without asking makes everything else look like begging. Begging doesn’t create movement; it usually has the opposite effect.”...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Here's a good reminder that the best content tells, not sells.

50 Respected Bloggers Gave Me WRONG Advice On Twitter Marketing. Oops! | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

I will probably get beaten real hard for this headline, but at least it should effectively steal your attention (…you will thank me for this very soon)

Nobody is actually wrong.

What is your #1 tactic for getting traffic from Twitter?

And every piece of advice I got was different, but completely legitimate.

However if you decide to follow it – you are very likely to fail.

That’s because of the gap between “what the blogger meant to say”and “what you thought he meant”.

So in this article I’m not just thoughtlessly copy/pasting the text that I’ve got from pro bloggers, but I’m actually going to explain the context that stands behind each answer....

You're Not the Star of Your Content Marketing | Convince and Convert

You're Not the Star of Your Content Marketing | Convince and Convert | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

I talk a lot about the principle of “Marketing Sideways” – content marketing that is inherently useful (a Youtility) but is NOT about your products and services per se. This type of content marketing transcends the transaction, and creates awareness for your brand at the top of the funnel – among potential customers that otherwise might not be introduced to your company and its offerings.

Many companies do this today, including Columbia Sportswear’s “What Knot to Do in the Greater Outdoors” mobile application. It tells you how to tie knots right on your phone. It transcends the transaction because Columbia doesn’t sell rope. Yet, the content execution is of interest to the company’s target market of outdoors enthusiasts because it is inherently useful and topically relevant....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Jay Baer reminds us your products and services are not all that interesting and that useful content marketing creates relationships based on relevance. See his 100 year-old case studies for a little fun with your coffee.

Why You Should Size Up Your Social Media Strategy | Social Media Today

It’s no secret that the key to a successful social media strategy is to show, not tell. Not only is our audience 4x more likely to remember visual content than they are text, they’re quicker to click on it, too; adding an image link to your tweet can increase engagement by a whopping 200%.

People have always been visual learners, but with numbers like that, marketers are starting to do something about it. Luckily, it’s never been easier to get visual on social. The popularity of image-based networks like Instagram and Pinterest has forced more traditional platforms like Twitter and Facebook to accommodate for visual content.

Now, most platforms have the option to directly attach an image to your tweet, status update, or post, making it seamless for marketers to boost social activity. But while marketers are embracing visual content in their social media efforts, their approach doesn't always fit the bill. Literally..
