We have plenty of followers on our Twitter accounts, and yet we are getting next to no retweets, mentions or overall benefits from those followers. Because of that, many people think that the whole Twitter marketing thing is all hype. After all, they seem to be doing everything right but they have nothing to show for it except for a lot of wasted time, and more aggravation than it was worth. Of course, interaction is not easy to build. Many people give up earlier than achieving it. One of the first steps to take: Learn more about your followers. 6 Things That You Didn't Know About Twitter | Jeffbullas's Blog | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Twitter was never meant to be a social network. In fact Twitter started life as an internal messaging service for a podcasting company just over seven years ago. But how things have changed.

On the social web we live on a diet of fast change and rapid media evolution. Twitter’s slow burning maturation often flies below the radar and Facebook changes such as the new timeline and graph search attract numerous blog articles, comments on Facebook and mass media attention. Twitter has become a multi-media social network without anyone really noticing....

New research study identifies Twitter Tribes by unique words

As a Twitter power user, I couldn’t resist looking into this Twitter research study on word usage in my favorite micropublishing channel. It’s fascinating to say the least.

It’s titled "Word usage mirrors community structure in the online social network Twitter." Researchers looked at more than 250,000 users to define some very interesting Tribes.

Who knew Twitter users were forming such unique Tribes and speaking their own language? Academics really do provide a useful service for the rest of us. Pointing out the sociological implications of social media and everything else we do....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

This Twitter study offers fascinating insight into social media behavior, not to mention a few nuggets of wisdom for PR and marketing pros.

'Little Twerp ... Get a Life': The New Yorker's Jon Lee Anderson Thinks He's Somebody on Twitter

'Little Twerp ... Get a Life': The New Yorker's Jon Lee Anderson Thinks He's Somebody on Twitter | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Jon Lee Anderson, a writer for a weekly magazine called the New Yorker, got angry on Twitter today. A reader with the Twitter name of Mitch Lake (@mlake9) had tweeted at Anderson (@jonleeanderson) to dispute a claim of fact in Anderson's online story about the death of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

Anderson had written that Chavez had left his country as "one of the world's most oil-rich but socially unequal countries," and Lake countered that in fact Venezuela was the second-least unequal country in the Americas. Lake was rude, using the internet idiom "wtf," which is an abbreviation for "What the fuck?" Whatever high ground may have belonged to Anderson, however, turned into a mudslide within the next 140 characters...

Science reveals what really increases Twitter followers | Poynter

Science reveals what really increases Twitter followers | Poynter | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The world of science has some new advice for people who want to increase their Twitter following, and it may sound something your mother used to say: If you don’t have anything nice to tweet, don’t tweet at all.

“Expressing negative sentiments in tweets is the second most harmful factor to growing a Twitter audience,” say researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology. They speculate about why: “This might be because Twitter is a medium dominated by very weak social ties, and negative sentiment from strangers may be unpleasant or uncomfortable for a potential new follower to see.”...

Don't Miss The Important Tweets - Filter Twitter With Tweetdig

Don't Miss The Important Tweets - Filter Twitter With Tweetdig | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

If you follow a large amount of people on Twitter it can be hard to keep tabs of Tweets on important topics. Tweetdig lets you filter Twitter by topic, user and more... like me you follow a massive amount of people on Twitter it can be hard to keep tabs of Tweets on topics that you don’t want to miss.  Twitter itself offers us lots of tools to help us mange our feeds, lists have become indispensable for me as have saved advanced searches.  I use Hootsuite to manage my Twitter feed and this also gives me lots of  options including search and list columns.

Tweetdig however does do something a little different with your searches, giving you an easy way to stay on top of news stories, users and more.  By creating filters you can easily keep up with the latest news as it breaks.  For example this morning there is lots of talk about the Superbowl last night both from a sports perspective and an advertising/social media perspective.  If I want to keep tabs on this I can easily create a filter within Tweetdig....

Tell me you love me: use of 'favouriting' on Twitter soars | Econsultancy

Tell me you love me: use of 'favouriting' on Twitter soars | Econsultancy | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Do you favourite tweets on Twitter? Has your use of this feature increased over the last year?

If the answer is yes, then you are not alone.

A graph from Isaac Hepworth demonstrates exactly how favouriting on Twitter has increased over the last 12 months. It all stems from the major update to the platform Twitter released in December 2011....

It's interesting to note how a change like this from Twitter, albeit a fairly significant one, can begin to alter the way people use a network.

Favouriting increased. But, according to Twitter, it increased in a very specific way. It was often @-replies (i.e. messages that were only really intended to be seen by the recipient) that were being favourited more than more general tweets....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

It's an interesting look at the "favoriting" trend as well as a reminder that it can be very useful for curation as well as letting someone know you liked their tweet.

Tweeting is Believing? Analyzing Perceptions of Credibility on Twitter | iRevolution

Tweeting is Believing? Analyzing Perceptions of Credibility on Twitter | iRevolution | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

What factors influence whether or not a tweet is perceived as credible? According to this recent study, users have “difficulty discerning truthfulness based on con-tent alone, with message topic, user name, and user image all impacting judg-ments of tweets and authors to varying degrees regardless of the actual truth-fulness of the item.”

For example, “Features associated with low credibility perceptions were the use of non-standard grammar and punctuation, not replacing the default account image, or using a cartoon or avatar as an account image. Following a large number of users was also associated with lower author credibility, especially when unbalanced in comparison to follower count [...].” As for features enhan-cing a tweet’s credibility, these included “author influence (as measured by follower, retweet, and  mention counts), topical expertise (as established through a Twitter homepage bio, history of on-topic tweeting, pages outside of Twitter, or having a location relevant to the topic of the tweet), and reputation (whether an author is someone a user follows, has heard of, or who has an official Twitter account verification seal). Content related features viewed as credibility-enhancing were containing a URL leading to a high-quality site, and the existence of other tweets conveying similar information.”...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Eye-opening research. You can haz Twitter credibility. ;-)

Last week at a Cision “Behind the Story” breakfast panel, Sree Sreenivasan was discussing how PR pros and journalists interact on Twitter and said, “I find PR people (and journalists) are generally using Twitter poorly. Some of them use it very well and those are the ones that succeed. The best PR people I work with are the ones who are connected, not because of Twitter, but because they read a lot, know the issues and have a great rolodex.” He challenged the panelists to identify some great PR pros on Twitter, people who are “doing it right.” In addition to the panel’s recommendations (I’ve included Sree’s below), I asked some industry experts – and my personal favorites to follow on Twitter – who in PR they thought did it right on Twitter. HubSpot Makes Twitter Analytics Easier With RetweetLab Tool

HubSpot Makes Twitter Analytics Easier With RetweetLab Tool | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

HubSpot, a marketing software company founded at MIT in 2006, has revealed a brand-new analytics tool that could help companies more effectively use Twitter for branding or promotional purposes.

...Retweet Lab's data is simple to use and surprisingly powerful. For example, in my case it revealed that I get the most retweets at around 7 p.m., even tough I usually tweet the most at 9 a.m. Thanks to the Retweet Lab data, I can now start tweeting more around 7 p.m. and in theory improve my Twitter influence. Similarly, the tool notes that tweets without "calls for action," such as "please tweet this," are infinitely more effective at generating retweets than ones that include such pleas. While this sort of information is useful for my own personal "brand," it's much more likely to be useful for bigger publishers or well-known brands....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

I can't say enough about the ReTweet Lab tool. You MUST test drive it. Powerful insight.

What Happens When You Double Your Tweeting Frequency? | Social Media Today

What Happens When You Double Your Tweeting Frequency? | Social Media Today | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Much has been written about how to maximize follower growth, interaction and click-through rates on Twitter; what days of the week to tweet and what time of day, as well as the structure and content of tweets themselves. However, few studies exists on the optimum volume and frequency of tweets. Assuming that best practices and etiquette are being followed, what impact can suddenly doubling the volume of tweets have on a business/organization account?

The Data

In September 2012, we increased the amount of scheduled tweets from 6 per day (seven days a week) to 12.

Using data gathered from Crowdbooster and Google Analytics, here is a comparison between a four-month period at 6 scheduled tweets per day and a four-month period at 12 scheduled tweets per day (data does not include replies and retweets)....
