Content curation is about moving from noise to context

Content curation is about moving from noise to context | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Since my last piece on turbo-boosting content curation, I’ve fielded plenty of questions on my curation workflow. I’ve also seen more brand examples of content curation – some of which I like, some of which irritate me. I’ll show you a few.

Curation can work well for brands, but it really starts with individuals. I define content curation as: The systematic process of sharing content from our expertise with our online networks.

The “systematic” part is there for a reason – if we just compulsively retweet/share things we like, that’s not curation. That’s seat-of-pants....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Here's some answers to questions I've gotten about the value of content curation, and some companies doing it right - or not.

These are companies and publications that don’t just aggregate content – they add their own commentary and spin to what they curate. Every edition of their newsletter, every blog post, every social media share is chosen for a specific purpose and reviewed by a human before it is shared.

In other words, these sources curate their content like museum curators. They aim for quality rather than quantity. They rely on themes to group and organize their content. They often explain why something is important, or why they felt it was worthy of inclusion.

They are discerning collectors. These are definitely not the only great examples of content curation examples, but they are at least some of them. We hope you’ll add your own favorites to the comments section below....

Why Brands Should Be Investing in Content Curation | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Content is king. Create more content. Write more blog posts.

That's the story that many content marketing gurus and social media gurus have been preaching for the last few years.

It's a story and an idea that has been talked about so frequently that we're now living in a world that is overcome with content. It feels like every topic is being written about. It feels like every acquisition is being analyzed. It feels like it's impossible to keep up with all the great content being created and shared.

Which is why now more than ever, there is a real need in the world for people who curate great content....

Content curation is a mess. Shout founder wants to change all that | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

I tried to get into Pinterest, I really did, but I could just never figure out how to utilize it like many of my friends and colleagues, so I did what any good lifestyle and tech writer should do when confronted with a service they don’t understand – give up on it. Out of site, out of mind. I obviously understand the benefits of a curation service like Pinterest, but it wasn’t for me.

Why am I talking about Pinterest, you ask? Well, this new app from Jeff Weisbein, called Shout, is kind of like a stripped-down version of Pinterest without the focus on pictures linking you to everything. Available on both iOS and as a Google Chrome extension, the app basically functions as a curation tool that lets you quickly add links to customized lists that you, or someone you know, has created. It’s a breeze to use, and really has almost endless possibilities for personal endeavors, hobbies, and collaborations with other creatives. Or maybe you just want to share some dank memes with your buds.

I had the chance to talk with Jeff to learn more about Shout, as well as the inspiration behind the app and how Shout can even be used for quick newsletter creation. Check it out below!...

Content marketing works. But it's a challenge. According to a Content Marketing Institute report, marketers said “producing content consistently” is one their top challenges. Content curation is one solution to this problem.

What does it look like in practice? Beth Kanter offers a useful definition: Content curation is the process of sorting through the vast amount of content on the web and presenting it in a meaningful and organized way around a theme. The work involves sifting, sorting, arranging, and publishing information.

10 Content Curation Tools Every Marketer Needs

10 Content Curation Tools Every Marketer Needs | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

"Curation" is one of those words that's always conveyed coolness to me. Take, for example, the job of curating art for a gallery, or curating music for a soundtrack. Cool, right? Content curation is just as much fun -- and just as important.

For the uninitiated, content curation consists of finding material relevant to your audience from a variety of sources, and sharing it strategically through your communication channels. For example, writing a roundup blog post of great marketing examples would require you to curate strong samples of content relevant to what you're writing about. And while very cool, it can be tricky. There are many, many social networks, news feeds, emails, and infographics full of such content that can demand your time and attention.

That's why the responsibility of content curation is important. Think of it as being a successful wedding DJ: Your selections can't all be ad hoc and safe. After all, people can only hear Kool & The Gang's "Celebration" so many times before the floor clears, and that sort of playlist isn't personalized for your audience. But if you know your audience, you can accurately gauge the temperature of the room and have the confidence to give the people what they want.

The same goes for content curation. Instead of just rounding up the most generally popular things on the web, pick the ones that are going to be the most relevant and interesting to your audience, and provide the context around them that makes your site a destination. Of course, we never said that was easy. Where do you find this content, anyway, especially given the information overload we opened with? Good news: We're here to help you prioritize the resources by outlining some of our favorites below.

10 Key Steps to Content Curation Success | L&D Blog

10 Key Steps to Content Curation Success | L&D Blog | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

I made the case for content curation in my previous post. The next priority is to decide who’s competent to do the curating and what the 10 key steps to content curation success are.

One option is to allow individuals or teams to curate content for themselves. Under this system, everyone spends a few hours each day checking multiple sites, sources and social media in search of the most relevant content. While this might be a nice idea, it will likely prove impractical given the pressures of modern working life.

So, your organization will need to have a designated – and trusted – curator, or team of curators. Ideally, these curators know the learners’ specific interests and professional goals so that they can deliver relevant external content, in the right place, at the point of need. This suggests that it’s L&D professionals who are best placed to become an organization’s curators for learning....

5 Factors That Could Impact Your Content Strategy in 2017

5 Factors That Could Impact Your Content Strategy in 2017 | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Nobody wishes you luck unless you’re an underdog. In Hollywood, our favorite protagonists like Rocky, Luke Skywalker, and Elle Woods all hear words of encouragement from friends and mentors before they take on a crucial challenge. But wishing someone luck also comes with the understanding that these protagonists may fail. (The subtext: Good luck because you’ll need it.)

However, those protagonists didn’t really need luck. When we break down their victories, we can see that they channeled all of their effort into preparing a strategy that would help them be successful.

Such preparation applies to everything from boxing to intergalactic warfare to content marketing. (You saw where this was going.) As brands increase their content investments, it will only get harder for them to outperform competitors. B2B brands already spend an average of one-third of their marketing budgets on content. In 2017, 39 percent of brands plan to increase this investment, making it that much harder to separate yourself and drive ROI.

As companies prepare to kick off their content programs in 2017, it’s important to look at the strategic levers that could impact their investments.

Since luck will only get you so far, here are five factors to consider for the upcoming year....

A Comprehensive Guide to Content Curation | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...If you haven’t used content curation as part of your content marketing strategy, you could be missing out.  Content curation sites and pages frequently attract audiences because they fulfill a very real need to skip through the clutter and find valuable content.  People simply don’t have the time nor the patience to pore through pages of Google results, Twitter feeds, and Facebook messages in order to find the items that want.  Content curation offers up a considerably faster and potentially useful avenue for discovery.

When you curate content well, you can build up an audience of people who depend on your ability to point them towards the resources they need.  You become an authority figure, a trusted source.  And in the internet, that trust is invaluable....
