23 science fiction and fantasy book covers that are out of this world - 99designs Blog | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Book covers have a tremendous impact on potential novel readers because the truth is, when we’re searching for a new read, we’re likely to judge a book first by its cover. Where a compelling book cover design might attract a new reader, a boring or confusing cover might lead them to keep browsing without another thought.

As sci-fi and fantasy novels create otherworldly settings and unimaginable scenarios, their book covers need to help communicate what’s happening within their pages in an engaging and meaningful way, without being distracting.

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Skeuomorphism vs. Flat Design vs Material Design

Skeuomorphism vs. Flat Design vs Material Design | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

It’s design vocabulary time! We know you’ve heard these two terms floating around: skeuomorphism and flat design. What do they mean?

They’re two contemporary designs trends that each have their own unique style and set of traits. Skeuomorphism creates a sense of familiarity by emulating materials, while flat design stays true to its medium, often feeling minimal and utilitarian.

These opposing styles create a major fork in the road for designers (especially those in UI design), and many projects begin with the question of which world to jump into. Luckily, we’re here to help answer that question with an in-depth look at each design style. We’ll also explore Google’s all-new design language, Material Design, which combines the aesthetic of both skeuomorphism and flat design....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Is this the year of illustration? - 99designs Blog

Is this the year of illustration? - 99designs Blog | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

For the early part of this century we saw a lot of colorful artwork in the shape of icons and vibrant mascots. Heavily shaded, three-dimensional characters, and richly rendered forms were all the rage.

Now, illustration is heading for a more authentic and organic experience. Low-color, hand-drawn looks that are specifically created for a single-site use are becoming more common and are expected to stick around.

Custom designs will more often take on a unique, loose and even childish feel. Websites will feel more personable compared to the copy and paste looks we have been seeing thanks to the prevailing flat design/minimalism bandwagon....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Illustration dates back long before the invention of writing. We are talking cave painting—Lascaux and Altamira to be precise. So, what's trending today?

WTF is a container?

WTF is a container? | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The promise behind software containers is essentially the same. Instead of shipping around a full operating system and your software (and maybe the software that your software depends on), you simply pack your code and its dependencies into a container that can then run anywhere — and because they are usually pretty small, you can pack lots of containers onto a single computer.

Why is this such a big deal? Before containers became popular, so-called “virtual machines” were the go-to technology to allow a single server to run lots of different applications that were isolated from each other. That’s the technology that made the first generation of cloud applications (and even web hosting services) possible. If you had to spin up a new server for every application, the cost would have gone through the roof....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Some ideas and new concepts are too good not to share. The potential for these "containers" is huge.

The Weird Ways Designers Play With Building Blocks

The Weird Ways Designers Play With Building Blocks | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

A new book, Let's Play, tasks 100 Swiss designers to play with toy blocks, then photographs the results, looking for trends.

In the new book Let's Play, artistic director Christiane Nill and photographer Lionel Henriod task 100 Swiss creatives who work in three-dimensional fields like architecture, sculpture, and industrial design to play with blocks for the camera then document what they make.

The parameters of Let's Play are simple. Designers are given 270 simple wooden blocks which have been custom created for the project. All blocks are visible at the beginning of each play section, and they're organized into groups of 34 different shapes.

Each player has 30 minutes to construct something using any of the blocks they want, plus three picked by the previous player—those must be incorporated into thee structure. (The first player used blocks selected by the carpenter who made them.) Beyond that, anything goes....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

It's a well-documented fact that architects love playing with toy blocks as much as kids do. But do they play with them differently compared with other adults? Fun reading for creatives from Fast Company Co-Design.

November full moon will be 'kind of a super supermoon,' astronomer says

November full moon will be 'kind of a super supermoon,' astronomer says | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

In astronomical terms, we're about to get up close and personal with our moon — super close, you could say.

When a full moon reaches its closest point to our planet in its elliptical orbit, that's called a supermoon, or perigee in scientific terms. And this month's supermoon on Nov. 14 is going to be the closest we've come to our orbiting neighbour in almost seven decades.

The last time the moon was this close was 1948, and it won't happen again until 2034.

"In that sense, it's kind of a super supermoon," David Hanes, a professor of astronomy at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont., told CBC News....

What I Learned About Business From the Richest Man Who Ever Lived

What I Learned About Business From the Richest Man Who Ever Lived | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

April 18, 1521, Martin Luther faces Emperor Charles the V in the Heylshof Garden to defend the infamous 95 Theses. Few people noticed the quiet banker in the room, simply known as “Jakob the Rich.” Jakob is a common merchant who will become the richest person who’s ever lived. Jakob will go on to accumulate a personal net worth equivalent to 2% of Europe’s GDP at the time.

Jakob’s net worth is basically Bill Gates + Warren Buffet + Jeff Bezos combined — then doubled.

Who the was Jakob the Rich? Why was he at Martin Luther’s trial? How did he get so damn rich? Well, he was a data-hungry banker looking after his investment.

Over the previous 16 years, Jakob had been lending the Catholic Church money — and the Pope had racked up an enormous debt. In order to pay off those debts, the Church launched a campaign for people to pay to have themselves and their deceased family members absolved of all sins....

15 proverbs from around the world that you should start using ASAP.

15 proverbs from around the world that you should start using ASAP. | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

If you live in America, chances are you've heard (or used) the phrase "Don't put all your eggs in one basket."

Most of us know it means, essentially, that you shouldn't make all your plans based on one possible thing happening. But it's kind of a weird phrase, right? Have you ever stopped to wonder where it originated?

Its use in print has been traced to the novel "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes in the early 1600s, although it possibly was mistranslated to an inexact English idiom from the original and may have other roots in Italian phrases.

Different cultures around the world all have their own similar sayings — proverbs, if you will — that make sense to those who've grown up speaking the language but sound downright odd to anyone who hasn't.

James Chapman is fascinated by these sayings and how they translate across languages and cultures....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

It is great fun to study proverbs from around the world because it helps you learn more about different cultures and different ways of thinking! Some proverbs are common across cultures. 35 Interfaces That Changed Our World

35 Interfaces That Changed Our World | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

They provide smarter ways to use simple things and simpler ways to use smart things. Interfaces release the potential of complex systems and technologies to the users who need them. And every once in a while, they change everything.

We believe user interfaces have been pivotal to some of the world's most important innovations. And since the line between an "interface" and an "invention" can be quite fuzzy, we thought we'd explore that line – and take a tour of how interfaces have changed the world.

At Xerox, we have a long list of our own handy interfaces: The green-means-go button on your copier. The simple, elegant lines of the “hamburger” menu on your cellphone display screen. A “computer partner” that helps cities enforce parking regulations.

So here's a list celebrating our favorite user interface examples...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

What's your favorite interface? Is it the touch screen, the ATM, your computer mouse? Can you even remember a typewriter or rotary dial telephone? This post goes into the interesting concepts file as well. A good reminder of how important interfaces are in our interaction with technology and devices in the past, now and in the future.
