No matter what you think of Ellen’s selfie, it’s hard to deny the impact the Oscars had on Twitter this year.
Twitter revealed this morning that tweets about the Oscars were viewed more than 3.3 billion times between 5 p.m. Eastern on Sunday and 5 a.m. Monday morning. But perhaps even more impressively, Twitter notes that those tweets reached 37 million people overall — not too far from the 43 million people who watched the show on ABC.
The usefulness of Twitter during live events isn’t anything new — rather than sitting back and consuming content, Twitter lets you become an active participant. But while Twitter’s viewership is steadily increasing, the number of people sending tweets is still significantly lower. When it comes to the Oscars, Twitter says only 5 million people actually sent tweets related to the event....
There are enough restaurants in New York City for one person to eat out every night for 54 years and never visit the same place twice.
If WalMart employees were an army, it would have the second largest military in the world.
Do these facts help your of social media strategy? Most likely not. You probably now know not to anger WalMart employees, and just booked a flight to New York City....
Here's how a global brand moved from a product-centered approach to a storytelling approach that increased social media following by over 700%.
...Are you looking for creative ways to grow your social media following?
Are you dealing with limited resources?
Then you’ll want to study what Microsoft Dynamics did....
...One of the more interesting examples of those five, I thought, was Walmart. They had SEVEN Walmart-based Twitter accounts, by my count. Wow! I have a few clients who have a tough time managing one–and here Walmart has seven. But then again, it is Walmart.
So, needless to say I was intrigued. Serendipitiously, Chad Mitchell, senior director-digital communications, sent me a short note thanking me for the initial post. One thing led to another and next thing I knew I was sending him a list of questions to answer about how and why Walmart manages its comprehensive Twitter presence. Want to see how the PR team of a Fortune 10 brand manages Twitter? Take a look....
Is the end of the content marketing era in sight?
...Let’s fast forward one more time to 2014 and look at the two factors that impact the economics of content marketing — the amount of content available and the amount of content consumed (supply and demand).
Of course the volume of free content is exploding at a ridiculous rate. Depending on what study you read, the amount of available web-based content (the supply) is doubling every 9 to 24 months. Unimaginable, really.
However, our ability to consume that content (the demand) is finite. There are only so many hours in a day and even if we consume content while we eat, work and drive, there is a theoretical and inviolable limit to consumption, which we are now approaching....

When thinking about social media strategy creation, where should a marketer start? One important component to be included should be a social media audit, where you survey the social landscape to find your customers, industry thought leaders and competitors on social spaces.
Through some analysis, a marketer is able to glean what works and what doesn’t based on the performance of competitor’s pages. By understanding how the audience responds to different types of content and calls-to-action, you can set your own channels up for success at the outsight....
A list of social media management tools is all well and good but which tools are the experts using? Find out here.
... Back in September of this year I published a post on social media management tools (you can find the post here) where I shared some of the most useful social media tools that I have used. This got me thinking – there is a crazy amount of social media tools out there that I haven’t tried, but what are other experts using? and why?
And, not just social media experts or social media influencers, but successful marketers and business owners too.
I then set out to contact some of the most influential people on the web and the result was simply amazing.
I asked: What are your top 3 tools for managing social media campaigns and why?...
Some people call the number of followers you have a “vanity metric,” but I think that’s too harsh a example of where social media followers reside. I prefer calling followers a “health metric.” They are an important part of your social analysis, but how many you have is somewhat irrelevant.
You can have strong relationships with your audience and even a high Klout score without having a ton of followers. To prove this point, here are the important factors that impact the number of followers you have....

So you want to get good at social media?
You need to have a plan. A guidebook. A strategy. You need some rules.
And rule number one? That’s obey the rules. As for rules number two through eighty, check out this fantastic infographic courtesy of Jeremy Waite, head of social strategy at Adobe.
And remember: while you can’t get anything done in the world without rules, sometimes it’s just as important to know exactly when you need to break them.*...
Charlene and I recently published a report that documented the 6 Stages of Social Business Transformation. In the process, we discovered the most common mistakes and successes businesses experienced along their journey. What was most surprising however, not really, was the cavernous disconnect between social media strategy and overall business objectives. - Only 34% of businesses feel that their social strategy is connected to business outcomes. - Just 28% of companies we studied feel that they have a holistic approach to social media, where lines of business and business functions work together under a common vision. - Only half said that top executives were “informed, engaged and aligned with their companies’ social strategy.”
The report was written to help strategists bridge the gap by understanding where they are, where they want to be, and how to get there efficiently. Charlene and I also noticed that the most elite companies among those we studied shared seven success factors in their social business strategy. Rather than publish a follow up report, we experimented with an ebook format. The result is a 100 page resource guide that will help you expedite and enhance your path to transformation....
It seems B2B marketers are starting to warm up to the idea that a handful of deals sourced by social can make the time and effort involved in pulling social media into the mix well worth the effort....
B2B marketing on social media is a bit like finding a needle in a haystack. You are looking for that golden conversation that turns into a real opportunity in the pipeline. But for B2B marketers, the typical deal size makes a single-source opportunity extremely compelling. With many social media sites to cover, your time is best spent targeting the sites with the largest community of users and using keywords and highly relevant messaging to get in front of these individuals.
Let’s face it, capturing mindshare on social media is a bit like drinking from a fire hose. But some social sites will allow you to target users more effectively than others. When it comes to Top Performers, B2B marketers ranked the top four most effective social media sites as LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, and SlideShare....

Mike Arauz, one of the many bright strategists at Undercurrent suggests it’s time for us (digital strategists especially) to become square-shaped. He claims, “you should just know everything.” In a post on Medium , he declares that if you work at the intersection of people, business and technology — I think that would include all of us — you need “an expansive approach to cultivating your expertise.”
He offers a list that might be a bit more technical than most of us want to explore, but a look at any of the emerging technologies validates his argument.
Digital printers will soon let us make our own products (eye glass frames, light fixtures, toys), print clothing items (tactile screens that let us feel the material are coming), and prepare dinner (or at least dessert.) If this doesn’t change how we market, sell and distribute, it will certainly affect consumers’ expectations for customization....

Want to know where social marketers are focusing in 2014?Looking for the latest social media trends to inform your marketing?
Based on new research, here are five areas you should start paying attention to right away.
Note: This article is based on Exact Target’s 2014 State of Marketing Report, which shows top marketing objectives, priorities and concerns for 2014.
Last week Princeton researchers released a widely covered study saying Facebook would lose 80% of its users by 2015-2017. But nowFacebook’s data scientists have turned the study’s silly “correlation equals causation” methodology of tracking Google search volume against it to show Princeton would lose all of its students by 2021. A Facebook spokesperson says “the report that Princeton put out is utter nonsense.” Indeed, it’s flawed throughout....
...If you want people to share content, you need to develop content that allows them to help or entertain others, reinforce their identity, or provide a persuasive argument (assuming they agree with you) to reinforce what they already believe or reaffirm their belongingness to a group that believes it. And then? Be prepared to provide reciprocal support and affirmation in return.
If this doesn't sound like a sound strategy for your organization, you are probably right. The model that social networks have devised for marketers to compete in is different than the model consumers participate in on a daily basis. You see, consumers aren't just looking for content that is worth sharing. They share content that contributes to their self-worth. How does that change your strategy?
Recently, Burger King Norway purged its Facebook fanbase. They reduced it from 38,000 fans to 8,000...on purpose. Their stated goal was to encourage fickle deal-hunters to exit their addressable fan base leaving those who really cared and preferred Burger King (over McDonalds).
For a quick service restaurant (QSR) or a fast moving consumer goods company (FMCG) this is a radical move. Brand loyalty isn’t what it used to be and many of us are happy enough to ask for Pepsi as Coke. Can a Burger King fan also be a McDonald’s fan? Chances are there is quite a bit of overlap. Still, the move to be more intentional about who is in your Facebook fanbase and your Twitter follower-base is right minded....

Ever heard the saying "Failing to plan is planning to fail?" That old but wise adage often rings true when it comes to social-media marketing. Creating a detailed, goal-oriented social-media strategy is just as important as having a rock solid business plan.
"If your social-media plan is to just wing it, your fans and potential customers are going to know," says Amy Porterfield, social media strategist and co-author of Facebook Marketing All-In-One for Dummies (Wiley, 2013).
Worse, it could turn them off of your brand and on to your competitors. To attract and engage social-media fans and followers -- and ideally convert them into customers -- you'll need to carefully map out a clear, effective social-media strategy. Here are some questions you should ask when building your company's social-marketing plan....
I don't know about you, but I'm tired of hearing "social media gurus" compare the effectiveness of Twitter versus LinkedIn, or Facebook versus Twitter, or Linkedin versus Facebook, or whatever other comparison you bring to the table. At the end of the day, you need harmony between your various social media accounts in order to truly reap the benefits of social as a marketing channel.
I'm so passionate about integrating your social media efforts that I presented on it at INBOUND 2013 with my session titled, Social Domination: How to Conquer 'The Big 3' Social Media Networks. This presentation dove into the importance of forming an alliance between the three largest social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn), perfecting the way you post to each of these networks, and improving how you communicate on each channel....
Feeling miserable? A new study has linked "declines in subjective well-being" (aka happiness) to using the world's most popular social network.
According to researchers from the University of Michigan, a sample of 82 young Facebook users (average age: 20) reported feeling less happy after using Facebook. As study co-author Ethan Kross told ABC, there is "something unique about Facebook use that is making people feel worse."The root cause of our apparent Facebook displeasure is the idea that we're falling short of our "friends" online. But only online friends. When researchers measured people's happiness after face-to-face or phone interactions, there was no measured drop in happiness. In fact, just the opposite....
