YouTube has 1.5 billion logged-in monthly users watching a ton of mobile video

YouTube has 1.5 billion logged-in monthly users watching a ton of mobile video | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

This year at VidCon, YouTube shared some new metrics that really drive home how much it’s dominating mobile video usage and how quickly its service is gaining viewers on TVs.

The highlight was the fact that there are now 1.5 billion logged-in users visiting the site every month. The distinction is important as there are undoubtedly still quite a few folks hopping on YouTube that aren’t necessarily using Google Accounts to do so.

The site announced it hit 1 billion monthly active users in 2013, though that number assumedly related to all visitors, logged-in and not.

Logged-in users spend an average of more than one hour per day watching YouTube just on mobile devices, a pretty daunting number that showcases just how pervasive video has gotten on the mobile web....

How CNN Prepped For Flashpocalypse | AdExchanger

How CNN Prepped For Flashpocalypse | AdExchanger | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

When the Flashpocalypse comes in July, CNN aims to offer advertisers space in its fallout shelter. The video-heavy publisher moved early to transition its video platform from Flash to HTML5 during Q1 of this year.

CNN averages over 464 million video starts a month, so it knew it needed to get in front of the tricky technical transition. In December 2016, the IAB called for all video ads to switch from Flash to HTML5 by July.

Google stopped accepting Flash creative in April, and it plans to stop serving Flash ads next month, in keeping with the IAB’s deadline. Chrome browsers stopped displaying Flash content in Q3 last year.“

Flash was at the heart of everything we did and had a way of showing up in virtually every one of our platforms,” said Alex Wellen, chief product officer at CNN. “Google was closing in by eliminating, tamping down or throttling Flash.”

But switching over to HTML5 posed challenges. CNN needed to make sure that all of its advertisers submitted their video ads in the right format, since Flash ads can’t run in an HTML5 player....

Top YouTubers: Blippi's Billion-Plus-View Empire

Top YouTubers: Blippi's Billion-Plus-View Empire | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

My two-year old son has become enamored with a colorful character named Blippi. He's one of the hottest rising YouTubers who has quite literally swept the children's educational market on the world's most popular video platform, soaring well past the billion-plus view mark. By curating content specifically geared towards helping children during their most important fundamental developmental stages, he's effectively carved a massive niche and a surprisingly large following.

One day, as my son sat enthralled by one of Blippi's videos, where he sings and dances and teaches children about all the various parts and components of a garbage truck, I knew that I needed to learn more. As someone who's entrenched in the online marketing industry and obsessed with things like passive income, I knew that what Blippi had achieved was nothing short of fascinating and amazing.

In fact, what I discovered from a rather extensive interview was even more amazing to me. Let's set aside the millions of dollars of revenue that Blippi has made, which is the brainchild of Stevin John, a creative professional from Washington State who once worked in Hollywood's film industry, behind-the-scenes, and let's look at the bigger picture here. From a branding and merchandising perspective, Blippi is sheer brilliant....

'The audience there is huge': A guide to the most popular publisher Facebook video hacks - Digiday | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

When Helen Havlak, engagement editor at The Verge, looks to the future, she sees video — and Facebook. Last year, the Verge’s video views overtook its pageviews. This year, she expects the tech site to more than double the number of videos it produces this year. “Video right now is the only way to build a Facebook page,” she said. “The audience there is huge.”

Publishers are all trying to become video producers, tantalized by the prospect of lucrative video ad rates and exposure on Facebook, where publishers have a better chance of getting their content seen by posting video than they do photos and text links. Media companies uploaded 931,000 social videos to Facebook in the first quarter of 2017, an increase of 109 percent year over year, according to Tubular Labs (measuring across 2,000 media companies).

But producing video is time-consuming and expensive, which is why, for better or for worse, they’re turning to various hacks. Here’s a guide to some of the most common tactics. We’ll let you decide if they’re brilliant or despicable....

More Spending on Social Video Ads Is Planned - eMarketer

More Spending on Social Video Ads Is Planned - eMarketer | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

More marketers currently invest in video advertising on Facebook and YouTube than on Twitter and Instagram. But they’re increasing how much they spend on all four social media platforms.

More than two-thirds (67%) of US marketers run video ads on Facebook, while more than half (51%) do so on YouTube, according to an April 2017 survey from cloud-based video creation company Animoto. By comparison, only 25% of marketers surveyed are spending on video for Twitter, with the same percentage buying video ads for Instagram.

But that doesn’t mean Twitter and Instagram are falling completely by the wayside. In fact, half of marketers said they plan to increase their investment in social video advertising on Instagram in the next 12 months, and 52% plan to do the same on Twitter....

Blog posts, ebooks, whitepapers, and other forms of written content can do this quite well, but written content just can’t beat video content on a number of levels.

Video content:

- Has a lower price of entry (easier to watch a few seconds of a video than read a few sentences in an ebook)

- Can convey a larger amount of information in a shorter amount of time (not always the case, but often the case)

- Is more accessible to some audiences (not everyone can read/wants to read/can read well/finds reading enjoyable)

- Is more engaging (audiences are more engaged by video content than by written content)

- Can more easily and more powerfully engage an audience emotionally....

YouTube SEO: How to Optimize Videos for YouTube Search

YouTube SEO: How to Optimize Videos for YouTube Search | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

When I was just a wee lass and HubSpot was first starting to make a name for itself, inbound marketing was a brand new idea. Marketers were learning that they couldn't just publish a high volume of content -- it also had to be high-quality and optimized in ways that made it as discoverable as possible through search engines.

And once upon a time, that content was largely limited to the written word. Eleven years later, that's no longer the case -- a comprehensive content strategy includes written work like blogs and ebooks, as well as media like podcasts, visual assets, and videos.

That last part -- video -- continues to be on the rise. According to the 2017 State of Inbound, marketers named video as a huge disruptor. "I mostly write content right now," one respondent said, "but I'm afraid it may begin to diminish more and more with video." And with the rise of other content formats comes the need to optimize them for search. One increasingly important place to do that is on YouTube, which is a video distribution website used by the masses (HubSpot included).

But how does that work? What are the steps you need to take to optimize your YouTube channel for search? We've outlined some major tips below. And if you're short on time, no problem -- check out the video summary here....

Is Interactive Video the Next Big Thing? 3 Creative Examples from Brands

Is Interactive Video the Next Big Thing? 3 Creative Examples from Brands | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Some fairly obvious characteristics have made video the web's most engaging media type when compared to text, images and combinations thereof. It's the perfect blend of audio and visual elements, drilled down into bite-sized chunks that appeal to the modern viewers' desire for immediate understanding.

But that's not to say it's quite the perfect storytelling device. It's close, but falls down in one simple area: when it comes to interacting with video content, users have only really been able to play, pause, rewind and fast-forward.

Interactive video changes that. In a nutshell, this emerging technology combines video content with user input -- allowing viewers to take a wide range of actions while watching video content.

They can click areas of the screen to define their own journey, answer questions, complete forms, buy products, download content and more -- often without leaving the player window....

Worldwide Social Video Ad Spending Levels Off (for Now) - eMarketer

Worldwide Social Video Ad Spending Levels Off (for Now) - eMarketer | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Thanks to heavy promotion by top platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Snapchat, spending on social video ads has experienced a surge in many markets around the world. But according to a new analysis, advertiser investments in this rapidly growing format have hit a temporary rough spot.

According to a forecast examining social video’s share of ad spending among advertisers worldwide between Q1 2016 and Q1 2017 by online advertising firm Kenshoo, investment in the format appears to have hit a plateau. While social video ad spending share saw continuous increases between Q1 and Q4 of 2016, Kenshoo noted there was a slight decline during the first quarter of this year on its platform.

However, because of the ongoing push by many social ad platforms to encourage more video spending, the slowdown does not seem likely to be cause for concern. Instead, it’s probably just a temporary roadblock on the path toward further growth....

Video Is the Now, but Short-Form Video Is the Future | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Now, we know that video works. According to a recent study by Animoto, over 76 percent of small businesses say they can measure a marked result from the video content that they’ve created. Plus, we have the anecdotal information from places like Facebook and Twitter and every single platform is integrating video into their application today. So that’s not the question. Video is here to stay. The question is, what should we put in our videos, and how long should they be?...

And I know I’m not alone. According to another study by our friends at Vidyard, 56 percent of videos created by businesses today are two minutes or less. And the audiences are responding to this. 53 percent of videos that are 90 seconds or less are watched to completion. That means that over 50 percent of people who are watching videos that are 90 seconds or less are actually completing them, which is pretty good given our attention spans are now, what, seven seconds or less? But compare that to videos that are 30 minutes or more, and you’re only getting a 10 percent completion rate. So if you want people to watch your videos, shorter is better....
