New Yorker Cartoons for Valentine’s Day - The New Yorker

New Yorker Cartoons for Valentine’s Day - The New Yorker | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

On Valentine’s Day, it’s important to tell the people you love that you don’t believe in the concept of true love, and that you expect your relationship to crumble with time, as all things do. Just kidding! You should tell the people you love that you’ll never leave their side, and plan to be buried alive next to them when they die. Actually, that’s probably not a good idea, either. Maybe just tell the people you love that you love them, and show them some Valentine’s Day cartoons.

Colin Stokes shares a collection of Valentine’s Day cartoons from the New Yorker.

10 Hilarious Posts From Advertising's Funniest Instagrammer

10 Hilarious Posts From Advertising's Funniest Instagrammer | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
You might think Instagram is all about photography. Not so, says David Kolbusz.

"Instagram is a writer's medium," the creative director declares at the top of his feed. And he makes a good case for that with his posts—a hodgepodge of everyday shots brought to life with hilariously twisted, ranty, profanity-laced captions.

Kolbusz frequently tees off on society's ills, harboring a particular distaste for idiotic technological "advancements." (Recent recurring targets include selfie sticks and hoverboards.) But some of the best posts are almost like short stories, as Kolbusz invents a whole ludicrous backstory to the image presented. Check out a handful of our favorite posts below....

Here's what Instagram can be if you're creative.

A new Chrome extension completely filters Donald Trump off your internet

A new Chrome extension completely filters Donald Trump off your internet | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Donald Trump can be entirely banned from the internet using a Chrome extension.

The software analyses websites for the use of his name and stops access to any website that contains it.

Its creator says that the tool hasn’t just been created to filter out the often incendiary pronouncements of the presidential candidate — but in the hope of broadening the debate, too.

"I hope folks will take this opportunity to learn more about the wide field of candidates out there," Rob Spectre, who created the Trump Filter, told CNN. The extension could allow people to actually learn about the issues that are at stake in the race to be the Republican candidate for president, he said....

17 of the Best Out-of-Office Messages We Could Find

17 of the Best Out-of-Office Messages We Could Find | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Without fail, I almost always forget to put up an out-of-office email message when I'm headed out for vacation. It's one of those things I remember just as I'm shutting down, or sometimes even after I've already left. (Heh, sorry guys.)

Since I usually throw them up in a hurry, I don't take a lot of time to get creative. However, I remembered to put up my OOO message early this time around -- so I decided to do some Googling for funny, clever, and snarky messages people have used in the past.

Here are some of the gems I found....

Oh Noel! Newspaper Publishes Santa Obit by Mistake

Oh Noel! Newspaper Publishes Santa Obit by Mistake | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
The “war on Christmas” has gone too far.

Children in Norway received a traumatic surprise last week when Aftenposten, the country’s second-largest newspaper, mistakenly published an obituary for Santa Claus on the newspaper’s Web site, where it quickly went viral.

The newspaper swiftly removed the fictional death notice and apologized, but not before a generation of little Haralds and Hildes were left crying in their herring. (Seriously, I kid the Norwegians because I love them.)

The obituary announced that “Dear Father Christmas, born 12 December 1788” had passed away on December 3 at the ripe old age of 227 in the town of Nordkapp, fittingly located at Norway’s extreme northern point above the Arctic Circle. The notice, which included an image of a cross, added that a funeral and memorial service would be held at the “North Pole Chapel” on December 28....

Cartoons for Thanksgiving - The New Yorker

Cartoons for Thanksgiving - The New Yorker | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Thanksgiving is upon us! As someone who’s half English and half American, I normally eat half a turkey on Thanksgiving, with a side of half a fish with half a portion of chips that have all been cut in half lengthways. After that, I watch an entire football game whilst kicking a soccer ball at my television. One of my other holiday traditions, which is less particular to me, is to look at cartoons about Thanksgiving—some of my favorites are in the slide show above. If you need me, I’ll be repairing my broken T.V. whilst clutching my stomach in pain....

The 20 Most Viral Ads of 2015

The 20 Most Viral Ads of 2015 | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Creatives, despair! With just six weeks left in 2015, the most shared ad of the year contains nothing but found footage, according to new data from Unruly—hilarious and adorable found footage, but found footage nonetheless.

But maybe that's OK. The spot, "Friends Furever" for Google's Android, caused a bit of consternation at first over at Droga5—the agency that created it, and which is known for creating some of the industry's most original advertising, not just slapping together funny clips it finds on the Internet.

But as David Droga said during an Advertising Week panel in September, you can't be too proud when it comes to creating something compellingly shareable....

5 Surreal Social Media Moments in the 2016 Presidential Race | Medium

5 Surreal Social Media Moments in the 2016 Presidential Race | Medium | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
The 2016 US presidential election is still more than a year away, but the battle is already heating up on social media — with some unexpected results.

Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Jeb Bush and the rest of the 2016 hopefuls are busy duking it out on Twitter and Facebook, as well as newer platforms like Instagram, Snapchat and live-streaming tools Meerkat and Periscope. At stake is a lot more than just likes and views. By many accounts, social media helped Barack Obama tip the balance during the 2012 election. (His campaign spent 10 times as much on social media as did Mitt Romney’s, earning Obama twice as many Facebook Likes and 20 times as many Retweets). Political pundits are already predicting that social media may rival traditional ads for influence in this election cycle.

The result has been a social media frenzy, with candidates from all backgrounds eagerly jumping in and trying to get their messages out. The quest to stand out from the noise has led to some pretty creative experiments on the part of the 2016 presidential class. Sometimes they get it right. Sometimes they get it wrong. And sometimes the results are just surreal....

Google Street View’s attempt to capture tomato-throwing festival squashed by revelers

Google Street View’s attempt to capture tomato-throwing festival squashed by revelers | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Google’s Street View team does an awesome job in getting just about everywhere these days, from the Great Barrier Reef to the top of Mount Fuji to inside the world’s largest passenger plane.

However, a somewhat brave attempt to offer stay-at-home travelers an immersive view of one of the world’s most bizarre festivals ended in failure this week when the camera-equipped car ended up being overrun by revelers. Oh, and tomatoes, too.

Yes, this was La Tomatina, an annual event in the town of Buñol in eastern Spain that sees some 30,000 people from around the world hitting the streets with the sole intention of laying waste to 150 tons of tomatoes....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

It may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but Google ended up having to pulp its plan to capture Street View imagery at Spain's famous tomato-throwing festival after its car and camera were damaged by exuberant revelers. Weekend funnies.

Mathematicians invent new way to slice pizza into exotic shapes

Mathematicians invent new way to slice pizza into exotic shapes | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Here’s one thing to impress your friends with the next time you order a takeaway: new and exotic ways to slice a pizza.

Most of us divide a pizza using straight cuts that all meet in the middle. But what if the centre of the pizza has a topping that some people would rather avoid, while others desperately want crust for dipping?

Mathematicians had previously come up with a recipe for slicing – formally known as a monohedral disc tiling – that gives you 12 identically shaped pieces, six of which form a star extending out from the centre, while the other six divide up the crusty remainder. You start by cutting curved three-sided slices across the pizza, then dividing these slices in two to get the inside and outside groups, as shown below....

The Most Fantastically Bizarre Social Media Phenomenon of 2015

The Most Fantastically Bizarre Social Media Phenomenon of 2015 | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

One week it was corn bread, next came challah, then naan and Italian loaf. An unnamed young woman spent this autumn placing 20 such pieces of bread onto a table—one at a time—before smushing her face into the baked goods and posting Instagram videos of the bizarre activity.

And 22 weeks since launching the Instagram account called BreadFaceBlog, she has 29,300 followers, 8,000 of which she gained in the last two-and-a-half weeks. Only two of her posts have failed to get a combined 1,000 likes and comments—the rest have performed in the range of 3,000 to 10,000 likes and comments.

To put that into perspective, the longtime bakery King's Hawaiian has 7,000 Instagram followers after being on the platform for nearly three years, and the bread brand regularly gets only a few hundred likes and comments per post. The woman behind BreadFaceBlog actually put her face on three King's Hawaiian rolls as if her cheeks were rolling pins and garnered 1,269 likes and 3,469 comments....

How Much You'll Need to Run to Offset Thanksgiving Meals | Daily Infographic

How Much You'll Need to Run to Offset Thanksgiving Meals | Daily Infographic | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Are you completely stuffed yet? If not, get to it! You’re in a dining room with family you unfortunately haven’t seen in way too long. In front of you sits some of the nation’s most iconic dishes. Family style sets in and the race begins.

Your cousins dig the serving spoon into the mashed potatoes like a lion’s teeth in prey. Uncle John rips off the turkey leg with the authority of a man of law. The fruit salad is demolished by the young’ns and wine flows like water off glaciers.

Okay, maybe the picturesque Thanksgiving isn’t how we all experience it. Mostly it’s catch-up conversations with family members and the host family stressing out too much while trying to please everyone at once. Yes it’s stressful, yes we eat too much, but there is hope at the end of the tunnel. Running.

After your meal take time to assess how much exercise you’ll need to offset the extreme amount of calories you just put in your body. Today’s graphic will help you add up the time needed out shedding turkey fat.
Jeff Domansky's insight:

Jackson Sanders reminds us that it will take 3-1/2 hours of running to work off the calories from that family Thanksgiving dinner. What the heck! Enjoy yourself and go for a run tomorrow

The 25 Funniest Brand Twitter Accounts You Should Be Following

The 25 Funniest Brand Twitter Accounts You Should Be Following | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

In 140 characters or less, brands on Twitter have given themselves a bad name. It's not exactly hard to understand why—from a series of Twitter missteps, to overused, lazy jokes or their persistent desire from some brands to insert themselves in conversations they don't belong in.

Why even bother following a brand's Twitter account?

Every so often a brand gets it right. Some demonstrate quick thinking during real-time events, as seen by Oreo's famous dunk in the dark Super Bowl tweet. Others use quick wit to win people over, think Arby's Grammy tweet pointing out the resemblance between its own logo and Pharrell's hat.

Then there are brands such as Totinos and DiGiorno Pizza that crack absurb and silly jokes at unexpected times to garner laughs and followers. Totinos tallies 77,400 Twitter followers, while DiGiorno has racked up 93,100. Take a look at funniest brand accounts in the video above that may even have the power lighten up that dark, brand-hating soul of yours....
