"Who Gives a Tweet: Evaluating Microblog Content Value" is the culmination of a year's worth of analysis conducted by the researchers Paul André of Carnegie Mellon, Michael Bernstein of MIT, and Kurt Luther of Georgia Tech as they set to find out what separates value from vagary in a Twitter post.... Why do so many companies hate having fun? I just don't get it. Makes no sense to me. I mean, I'm sure these companies aren't full of boring people. So that said, why do the people who work at these companies who like to talk, laugh and have fun in person all of a sudden become stodgy, boring and drab when it comes to creating content to tell their company stories?...
...There is a significant difference between customers and a social media fan base, says Abraham. “The people who you have historically always thought about as your franchise that you’re going out to build a business around are often very different from the ones who seek you out on social,” she said. The online fan base for Starbucks, for example, is strikingly younger than its regular customer base. Knowing the demographics of your fans is particularly important, Abraham said. “That has an impact on your messaging strategy, it has an impact on what you would want to say to these people, and how you want to say it,” she said....
Three things to consider when your client or boss tells you to build a Facebook page or launch a Twitter account. This might be unexpected advice coming from an agency’s lead representative for social media, but the truth is that social media will not save your marketing program. With my mind on the approaching start of spring training, here’s an analogy: The pitcher is one of the most important members of a baseball team, but pitching alone can’t carry a team to the World Series. The same is true for social media. Marketing is a team sport, and social media is just one player.... [Amen! - JD]

Even as it tries to branch out to reach broader audiences through its news service, Reuters knows its core market is the business set — managers, officers, decision makers. Information is the core of Reuters’ business (even more so Thomson Reuters’) and Social Pulse is their newest attempt at creating a product that can merge their editorial vision and data proficiency....
One of the points I had hoped to emphasize in my last post was that Twitter, blogging, Facebook and Google+ offer an even more controlled communications environment than what a fastidiously prepped/messaged executive might face in a media interview.... ...Maybe it doesn’t appear that these people or companies are content related at face value. But in a world where every company is a media company, every business is content related. And that makes every passionate professional, marketer or otherwise, a content creator. A lot of people pushed back on this concept which we touched on in a previous post titled: if your team hates blogging, you need a new team. Like it or not, that’s the world we live in. Besides, how can anyone hate to create content in a category they are involved in and have commitment to?...
