Integrated Communications and the "New" Newsroom - D50 Media - D50 Media | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Story telling is the new PR and marketing on social steroids. Brands and even the media, have had to rethink their content strategy.

...Our world is now immersed in a 24/7, 365 news cycle and it has caused mayhem for brands and for the agencies that work with them. There’s advertisers doing PR. Digital shops doing print media. PR shops doing traditional advertising strategy. Basically, the communications world has been flipped on it’s head. There’s no way to figure out what’s heads or tails.

One thing is for certain, however, storytelling is the main focus of companies and PR, digital marketing and advertising all have a role in it....

David Skok: Aggregation is deep in journalism’s DNA

David Skok: Aggregation is deep in journalism’s DNA | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
The aggregators of today will be the original reporters of tomorrow — it's how disruption happens.

This past weekend, I was out with a friend who happens to be a former editor at Time. We were analyzing the current state of the news media in light of recent developments, including The Huffington Post’s plans to launch a 24-hour live web TV network and Buzzfeed’s aggressive push into politics. These organizations — often lambasted for aggregating other’s content while producing little of their own — are repositioning themselves with new strategies, with more room for distinctive, often original content.

My friend argued this was nothing new. Henry Luce’s Time started as a full-fledged aggregator almost 89 years ago....

Test Kitchen guest speaker Dan Busse, founder of Boulder, Colorado-based RaiseYourVoice.us, is hoping that his widgets as used on news websites will allow news consumers to be guided toward taking action after reading the news, whatever their point...

...a few news sites are beginning to experiment with a beta version of RaiseYourVoice’s website widget that points readers to their elected representative and public officials, and to relevant advocacy groups. Inserted in a web news story similar to social-media widgets for Facebook, Twitter, et al, clicking on the RaiseYourVoice widget will lead you to write to your public officials, perhaps sign a petition, and to visit websites of groups involved in the issue of the news coverage (e.g., fracking, in our example)....

Does creating hashtags and trending topics on Twitter actually work?

Does creating hashtags and trending topics on Twitter actually work? | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Everywhere I go now I see people advertising hasthtags and trying to get things trending on Twitter. I saw about ten examples at the weekend alone. Movie trailers. On outdoor advertising, pushed during TV shows. On food packaging and in restaurants. People have suddenly gone #hashtag mad.

The aim that most people have is to create “word of mouth” marketing where lots of people are mentioning something with a hashtag and then linking it back to their product. Hashtags were actually created by the Twitter users themselves as a way of grouping conversations together, but it is marketeers who have embraced them most recently....

Tomorrow’s comms teams: stand up natural narrators | Earlin' PR abuse

Tomorrow’s comms teams: stand up natural narrators | Earlin' PR abuse | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...What struck me is that the change that’s coming for communications teams, and has already started to take effect actually, is that communications is becoming a long-term game rather than something overly caught up with shot-term wins. Tomorrow’s comms teams are going to have to both mastermind the brand’s story and tell each of its chapters – and pages – in the most compelling way to hook readers in. They must both sustain their interest and build their belief.

It’s storytime.

To succeed with this, brands will need storytellers, not just good orators, curators, conductors or stuntmasters. Those storytellers will need to know the beginning of the story, its intended end (of that instalment) and how they’ll get there. And most of all, who they’re writing for....

Shhh! Pope praises value of short tweets, silence | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI praised new communications technologies like Twitter on Tuesday (Jan. 24), saying that even “concise phrases, often no longer than a verse from the Bible,” can convey “profound thoughts.”

Benedict did not explicitly refer to Twitter in his yearly message for World Communications Day, but Monsignor Claudio Maria Celli, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, told reporters that “it’s safe to say that a reference to ‘tweets’ is there.”

Benedict wrote that in today’s world, “various types of websites, applications and social networks” can help people “find time for reflection and authentic questioning.”...

Why do journalists keep botching the facts on Twitter?

...Defenders of the social media realm rarely seem to want to get at why these massive ethical lapses continue to occur on Twitter. And I just won't buy the idea that "this is the way it is" or "letting everyone know you made a mistake is great for transparent journalism."

Don't get me wrong, I love the many benefits of social media and I teach about its journalistic value. But I also feel that we all need to begin practicing "safe social media" practices to protect us all....

This is definitely not a chicken and egg question!

A debate in content marketing circles is whether or not you should simply focus on creating original content and forget content curation. Let’s be clear as my fellow content curator, Jan Gordon, says: There is no curation without original content.

I might qualify this a bit by saying, there is no curation with awesomely addictive social content! And that means creating content – blog posts, tweets, Facebook updates, YouTube Videos – that is valuable and high quality....
