How The World Would Look If We Could See All The Radiation From Our Cell Phones

How The World Would Look If We Could See All The Radiation From Our Cell Phones | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

If you’re reading this, you’re likely bathed in several channels of cell phone radiation at once. But while we can spot cell phone towers and antennae, the waves themselves remain invisible. Following up on a project to visualize what Wi-Fi might look like in cities, artist-researcher Nickolay Lamm has imagined what cell phone radiation would look like if emitted as waves of light.

Lamm worked with eight academics and engineers to verify that the images we’re looking at are accurate representations of cell phone radiation. Like radio, cell phones rely on radio frequency waves, which emit low-energy radiation. Unlike ionizing radiation--released by higher-energy gamma rays, x-rays, and ultraviolet rays--exposure to cell phones’ non-ionizing radiation has not been proven to cause serious damage to living tissue

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Stunning and possibly concerning photographs are worth a lock. Recommended reading. 9 / 10

Kwang Hyun's curator insight, December 13, 2013 12:32 AM

This is just an interesting sight that if we would see how many cell phones we use daily, it can cover the whole world multiple times. It was very interesting to see. It is pretty crazy how we are involved with techoniogies now.

rodrick rajive lal's curator insight, December 13, 2013 1:12 AM

We are bathing in a deadly cocktail of radiation! No wonder it is like being at the receiving end in a microwave oven. Radiation can alter our DNA, and cause mutations to happen! Mutation may be defined as accelerated evolution in layman's terms! Increasing cases of cancer, pshyco-neural complications, birth defects, you name it, all these can be aggravated by this deadly exposure to radiation! No wonder we are so obsessed with technology that we are ready to ignore all those emissions all for the sake of comfort! This is an article that is simply laying bare the facts!

The myth of the brainstorming session

The myth of the brainstorming session | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

From my experience working at an agency, as a designer, and at ooomf, coming up with ideas from a single brainstorming session like this one is usually not the most effective way. Many people I’ve come across, including the most creative ones, need individual time to let ideas marinate before the best concept reveals itself (even if it’s something that seems as simple as naming a website)....

These are the head-turners that leave us with an unexpected smile. They’re the ads we don’t see every day, and the ones we applaud for their raw creativity and clever execution.

Your social media obsession won’t make an enduring mark on the world

Your social media obsession won’t make an enduring mark on the world | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Roughly 40,000 years ago, our ancestors made the earliest known cave painting in northern Spain. Their dots and stenciled handprints eventually gave way to fancier forms of communication like writing, which arose in ancient Mesopotamia around 3,200 BC. Paper, first invented by the Chinese in 105 AD, combined with writing, became the king of content storage for roughly 1,900 years.

Today, digital repositories of knowledge replace the physical. But here is irony: That 40,000 year old cave painting in Spain has survived and probably will survive for much longer than anything you write on Facebook, Twitter, and the majority of other social media sites. As far as technology has come, it may in fact be worse at preserving content in a way that matters....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

What a delightful find and enjoyable read. Exploring centuries of writing and sharing ideas, and wondering whether content goes to Twitter and Facebook to die?

MTD's comment, October 14, 2013 5:00 AM
Good to get a sense of perspective here; we are impermanent. Even our most enduring cultures are mere scratches. And our current obsessions will not become history just because they consume us today. Does that make them worthless? No. Whole lives are invested here. But that perspective needs to be borne in mind.
Natalie den Engelse's curator insight, October 14, 2013 5:18 AM

Interesting viewpoint =>#social media content has no more permanence than the wave a pebble makes upon dropping into the river. Enjoy while it last :)

MTD's curator insight, October 14, 2013 5:58 AM

Let's be clear - social media has always existed. All media is social. And as this lesson from history makes plain, we need to understand that our communication is temporary. What we make of it, however, and the effect we have on the world through it, can live on.

Medium: One year of publishing 'things that matter' | Media news | Journalism.co.uk | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Since launching in private beta last year, Medium has been building up its platform, which aims to offer a simple but 'beautiful' reading and writing experienceIt was one year ago this week when the online publishing world was abuzz with the news that two of Twitter's founders had launched a new platform called Medium, in private beta.In the early days only a select group of people were allowed behind the scenes to contribute content to Medium.

Some details on the platform were made public via an announcement post from Ev Williams, in which he described Medium as "a new place on the Internet where people share ideas and stories that are longer than 140 characters and not just for friends".In the past year the group of people invited to write has grown, and we are told it "should be a short wait from now" when the platform will be available for all to use.

The main aim of Medium is to be "the best place to read and write about things that matter", and this emphasis on both the writing and reading experience has been reflected in its approach over the past 12 months....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Medium grows larger in influence. Medium continues to impress with the quality of its design and, most important, the quality of its writing. It's a great resource for those hungry for quality ideas, well written. Wonder what will happen when it goes public and they try to monetize it? I hope they keep makes it work beautifully now.

"Fifty Percent Of 'The Tipping Point' Is Wrong." Jonah Berger Shows You Which Half | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Jonah Berger wants to be the next Malcolm Gladwell. Welcome to the making of a guru 2013 edition.Jonah Berger has descended to the lowest common denominator: breasts. "It's more difficult than you think to find a fully clothed picture of Kim Kardashian,"

Berger teases a lecture hall full of Wharton MBA students. The reality star's Cinemascopic cleavage is hovering behind Berger, who at 32 could easily be mistaken for one of his students. Berger then makes the big reveal: Companies pay Kardashian some $10,000 for every tweet about a product.

"Today we're going to ask," he says, striking a Dead Poets Society pose, a sneakered foot hanging off the table, "Is she worth it?" That is to say, is she an "influential"--a term thrust into the spotlight by Malcolm Gladwell's 2000 best seller, The Tipping Point. Then Berger pushes it one step further: Do influentials even exist?...

17 Cartoons that Will Change Your Business - Brian Solis

17 Cartoons that Will Change Your Business - Brian Solis | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

When writing my new book, What’s the Future of Business, Changing the way businesses create experiences, I felt that text wasn’t enough. So, I sought the wit and creativity of my good friend from the ole Web 2.0 days Hugh MacLeod aka @gapingvoid to help summarize each chapter in the form of a toon. Then we got to talking, why limit the cartoons to just the book?

Hugh MacLeod is not only a dear friend but also one of my biggest inspirations. His artwork is a magnificent harmony of emotion, wit, logic and satire. When I thought about the future of business, I pictured it beyond words on a page, I hoped to bring together art with the art of storytelling. I couldn’t think of anyone other than Hugh to visualize what the future (WTF) is and should be.As such, we decided to free them from the confines of bindery and instead stitch them together in this free Slideshare. We’ll be releasing each of the individual graphics and the story behind them over the next few weeks. I hope you are inspired by his work the same way I am...

One Year Later, Medium Is Changing the Way Its Writers Write and Its Readers Read | Mediashift | PBS | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

It was just more than a year ago that Ev Williams and Biz Stone created the publishing platform Medium....

At the heart of Medium is a sense of connectedness between those who create words and those who consume them, and the site’s future looks promising to technology experts like Warren.“

As a platform, I envision Medium becoming a curated magazine of sorts that lives digitally,” she wrote via email. “I think with a strong tablet app that is able to curate Medium’s content flipboard-style, the platform could actually also be a publication in its own right.”

For now, the site continues to guide readers through a consumptive experience unlike any other — and meanwhile, the writers are responsible for building up Medium’s content and shaping the site, post by post. “We want to optimize for great interactions between writers and readers,” Davies wrote via email....

What is The "Internet of Things"? | b2bmarketing.net | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

... You’re driving along the road. An engine warning light appears on your dashboard, you take your car to a service centre where the mechanic plugs in diagnostic equipment and corrects the engine’s timing. That’s M2M.

You’re driving along the road. A sensor constantly transmits engine management data to a computer that detects a timing anomaly and instructs the car’s onboard computer to improve the engine timing. You don’t even know it’s happening. You just keep driving. That’s the Internet of Things.

That’s one example. There are millions. Automotive, manufacturing, energy, healthcare, property… the Internet of Things is relevant and increasingly applicable to every business market. My favourite so far is the Egg Minder from GE. For just $14 the Egg Minder monitors how many eggs you have in your fridge and alerts you via mobile app when it’s time to buy more. Why Stephen King Spends 'Months and Even Years' Writing Opening Sentences

Why Stephen King Spends 'Months and Even Years' Writing Opening Sentences | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The author of horror classics like The Shining and its 2013 sequel Doctor Sleep says the best writers hook their readers with voice, not just action....

Stephen King: There are all sorts of theories and ideas about what constitutes a good opening line. It's tricky thing, and tough to talk about because I don't think conceptually while I work on a first draft -- I just write. To get scientific about it is a little like trying to catch moonbeams in a jar.

But there's one thing I'm sure about. An opening line should invite the reader to begin the story. It should say: Listen. Come in here. You want to know about this.

How can a writer extend an appealing invitation -- one that's difficult, even, to refuse? We've all heard the advice writing teachers give: Open a book in the middle of a dramatic or compelling situation, because right away you engage the reader's interest. This is what we call a "hook," and it's true, to a point. This sentence from James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice certainly plunges you into a specific time and place, just as something is happening:

"They threw me off the hay truck about noon."...
