A recent report by the Pew Research Center stated that 78% of Internet users research products and services online. A large majority of this is done through social media and if you are not a part of the conversation, you are losing out on a chance to manage and grow your brand’s reputation. One of the best ways to grow your brand’s presence is by targeting and engaging influencers, this allows you to quickly grow your brand’s awareness and influence.

Your Casual Acquaintances on Twitter Are Better Than Your Close Friends on Facebook | Wired Opinion | Wired.com

Your Casual Acquaintances on Twitter Are Better Than Your Close Friends on Facebook | Wired Opinion | Wired.com | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

... In a world of status updates, tangential, seemingly minor ties become part of your social fabric. And they can bring in some extremely useful information.

In 1973, sociologist Mark Granovetter gave a name to this powerful process: “The Strength of Weak Ties.” Granovetter had spent time researching the ways in which people found new jobs. After surveying hundreds of job finders, he discovered there were three main strategies: responding to job advertisements; direct application and coldcalling; or harnessing personal contacts.

When Granovetter analyzed the data, two things leaped out. First, jobs that people heard about via personal contacts were best of all. These jobs were more likely to have high salaries than jobs found through formal means or direct application, and they were more likely to be fulfilling: more than 54 percent of the people who’d heard of their job through personal contacts were “very satisfied” with the new job, compared to 52.8 percent who’d used direct application and only 30 percent of those who’d used formal methods....

Influencer marketing is the new Eldorado: who will lead the gold rush? | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

... Social media spend is over-concentrated on top networks, esp. Facebook.

It’s absurd to me that 75% of social media budgets are invested on Facebook and Twitter. Yes, the two leading platforms are huge traffic generators, but they are certainly not the only place where content is shared and where influence takes place.

Asking your friends is not always the best way to obtain information about a service or a product. 140 characters do not allow for a very articulated argument.Influencers use a much richer combination of channels to publish their content: blogs mostly, and - increasingly - public content-driven platforms such as Quora, Pinterest or Instagram. It is time for brands recognise that...

Time to Purge Your Fan Base? - Digital Influence Mapping Project

Time to Purge Your Fan Base? - Digital Influence Mapping Project | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Recently, Burger King Norway purged its Facebook fanbase. They reduced it from 38,000 fans to 8,000...on purpose. Their stated goal was to encourage fickle deal-hunters to exit their addressable fan base leaving those who really cared and preferred Burger King (over McDonalds).

For a quick service restaurant (QSR) or a fast moving consumer goods company (FMCG) this is a radical move. Brand loyalty isn’t what it used to be and many of us are happy enough to ask for Pepsi as Coke. Can a Burger King fan also be a McDonald’s fan? Chances are there is quite a bit of overlap. Still, the move to be more intentional about who is in your Facebook fanbase and your Twitter follower-base is right minded....

Do Social Media Followers Really Matter?

Do Social Media Followers Really Matter? | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Some people call the number of followers you have a “vanity metric,” but I think that’s too harsh a example of where social media followers reside. I prefer calling followers a “health metric.” They are an important part of your social analysis, but how many you have is somewhat irrelevant.

You can have strong relationships with your audience and even a high Klout score without having a ton of followers. To prove this point, here are the important factors that impact the number of followers you have....

Ali Anani's curator insight, November 4, 2013 12:59 AM

Interesting ideas, I guess too many and too little numbers of followers is not impacting. It is in between, the degree of which depends on many factors such as disposable items available, time spent on social networks, field of interests, engagement of followers and other ffactors.

Janine Lloyd's curator insight, November 4, 2013 1:32 AM

The amount of fans or followers you have is not necessarily a good metric of your brand or company's health. We need to move beyond fans and followers to more relevant content and engagement in social media to really win. Content helps define your brand, carries your message, and even grows your following.

We need to be looking at insights to delve into the quality of engagement, quality of followers, shareability and talkability.

5 Steps To Becoming A ‘Highly Recommended’ Brand On Social Media

5 Steps To Becoming A ‘Highly Recommended’ Brand On Social Media | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

More than 90% of consumers report that a word-of-mouth recommendation is the top reason they buy a product or service, according to Nielsen. It’s partly why Angie’s List, an online aggregator of consumer reviews, now has a market cap near $1 billion — because consumers want and use reviews they can trust.

That’s the central theme of digital marketer Paul Rand’s new book “Highly Recommended: Harnessing the Power of Word of Mouth and Social Media to Build Your Brand and Your Business.” In it, he argues that the number-one thing that drives business today is recommendations. To win, he says every business, from the corner dry cleaner to a major corporation, should strive to become the most highly recommended brand in its category....

Any PR firm working with a big business client today will advise that client’s public face to become, well, more public. This means going digital, either on social media or in corporate communications designed to get internal teams and investors excited. But what about going a step further and creating editorial content in the interest of becoming a digital thought leader/business strategist a la Richard Branson or Tony Hsieh? (It’s not enough to write a book anymore.)

We ask because, before today, we’d never heard of JetBlue Airways chairman Jeff Peterson. But now we don’t just know who he is—we know that he has some ideas about how to make his industry more efficient. You can see by the numbers that his LinkedIn post on “A Common Sense Solution to Slow Airline Boarding” has been quite successful....
