Morgan Lefkof's curator insight, October 12, 2014 11:08 PM

This article discusses the importance of Instagram for businesses. Adding Instagram to your social marketing mix can increase online reach and attract new business. The article explains how to start your business’ Instagram and gives recommendations on meaningful social media campaigns. The next part of the article gives some information about Instagram. It was launched in October 2010 and was bought by Facebook in April 2012. Instagram members can share photos and videos using the phone application or the online site. The next portion of the article discusses why a brand should be on Instagram. Around 200 million people and 75% of brands already have Instagram accounts. It is now one of the largest social media platforms. With these high numbers, there is a chance that your brand is already being mentioned on Instagram.

I believe that Instagram is a very big contender in social media. As the article stated, this platform is growing and will continue to gain more members. I know some people who check their Instagram more than their Facebook. When completing our social media audit, I noticed that some businesses lack presence with Instagram. Businesses should read this article to see how beneficial it is to have an Instagram account.

The results reported by Chobani and Taco Bell are in line with metrics Facebook disclosed from Ben & Jerry's and Levi's last December.

...Neither the brands nor Instagram disclosed the spending by the campaigns, an important factor for advertisers considering the platform. The ads are sold on a CPM basis, meaning advertisers pay a fee based on every 1,000 people reached. Salesforce has estimated the average price of an app-install ad on Facebook at $5.68. 12 Instagram best practices from Fiona Hogan:

  1. First and foremost, no more than 1/6 of your posts may be selfies. Otherwise, you will appear to be more of a self-obsessed tool than other Instagrammers. Also, do you really look that different on a day to day basis to warrant me having to see your face constantly?
  2. Don’t post more than twice a day. It makes people wonder “Is so-and-so really out for a bike ride, getting back to nature and being cool/active or did she bike out there, take a picture, then sitting fucking with her phone for the next 20 minutes to find the perfect filter to put on a perfectly good view that’s right in front of her?” You have better thing to do than Instagram, at least, that’s what we want people to think....

The article summarized 26 tips for using instagram, One tip is being familiar on how to use Instagram for business.  Another tip is balancing entertaining and fun images with pictures from your business. Cultivate a following by connecting your Facebook account, use relevant and popular hashtags, and being engaging. Following your followers will also help one's business to grow. Having a flexible and consistent posting plan will be strategic and beneficial to a business. Inspiring customers will help the business be engaging with customers. Implementing photo contests between Facebook and Instagram will be a fun way to interact with potential customers. A business should market its brand using trends. Rewarding followers is an excellent strategy to gain more followers and customers in general. Having photos of happy employees gives a business a positive image and will attract customers. Businesses son Instagram should also have an elaborate visual experience for their followers. These tips will greatly benefit businesses on Instagram.

Rebecca Lynch's curator insight, December 9, 2014 8:16 PM

Instagram can be tricky for businesses. No one wants ads in their feeds. If a company just posts their products all of the time, it won't have many followers. GoPro is a fantastic example of how to use Instagram to produce engaging content while still increasing brand awareness. They have a Photo of the Day featuring a stunning, unique image that someone took using their equipment. They have 3.6 million followers, which is incredible for a business account. Other companies should, as the article says, have a balance between promotion and fun images. The more a consumer feels as though they know the company, the more inclined they will be to choose it over a competitor. Showing that the company shares the same enthusiasm and interests as their consumers goes a long way in developing relationships.

Can’t Link From Instagram? Check Out Mashable’s Nifty Bitly Trick | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

One of the limitations of Instagram as a social media marketing tool is that links in posts aren’t clickable. It’s not a deal-breaker — there are many other reasons to use Instagram as part of a marketing mix, including the ability to promote your brand with an active, young audience — but for businesses hoping to bring people back to their websites, the lack of hot links has always been a drawback.

Not a problem without a workaround, however.

Links in Instagram’s profile area are live, a fact that social media news publisher Mashable has been taking advantage of since last spring. Nearly every time Mashable posts on Instagram, it reminds users to click on the link in its profile to learn more about the post’s topic. Here’s how it looked on one of Mashable’s more clicked upon recent Instagram posts...

If you add contest regularly people will be looking on your page more often. It doesn't have to be a big prize but if you give away something that will get peoples attention. Also I really like the idea of using direct (private) messaging. This makes followers feel like they have a part in the company. That is very important because it makes them feel special and it helps you stand out from other companies.
