How small businesses can make the most of Twitter

How small businesses can make the most of Twitter | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

"If there’s one thing you have if you run a small business, it’s time. If there’s one thing you probably don’t have, it’s money."

I have to credit the above statement to Will Critchlow, it truly condenses what I'm about to discuss in a simplified way.

Essentially social media costs nothing but can be a fairly time consuming practice depending on how many platforms you choose to use. Social media is also the key way for a small business to develop awareness, raise its profile, gauge its market and interact with existing and future customers. As a small business you're in a great position to start exploiting social media for all its worth...

New TweetDeck feature functions a lot like Storify for Twitter - AGBeat

New TweetDeck feature functions a lot like Storify for Twitter - AGBeat | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

TweetDeck introduces customized timelines for Twitter, adding a Storify-like element to the native app.

TweetDeck has just introduced fancy new customized timelines for tweets, but what exactly are these timelines? They aim to give you more control over how your Tweets are organized. You can customize which Tweets you want to include in a personalized feed; you can do this manually or by using API. Each timeline is public and has its own page on Twitter, allowing you to share it with others, as you continually update with favorite Tweets.

If you are ready to try timelines with TweetDeck, you can create a new timeline by adding a new column. To do this simply click on the “+” icon in the sidebar and then click “custom timeline.” And then you can simply drag Tweets into the timeline. Once you have created a custom timeline, your Tweets will have a “” icon. This will make it easier to drag it onto your custom timelines columns....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

This new feature looks very promising for research, monitoring sharing tweets. I'll update once I've had a chance to test drive it.

Introducing custom timelines: create timelines of Tweets for everyone | Twitter Developers

Introducing custom timelines: create timelines of Tweets for everyone | Twitter Developers | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Today we’re introducing custom timelines to give you more control over how Tweets are organized and delivered on the Twitter platform....

Custom timelines are an entirely new type of timeline –– one that you create. You name it, and choose the Tweets you want to add to it, either by hand or programmatically using the API (more on that below). This means that when the conversation around an event or topic takes off on Twitter, you have the opportunity to create a timeline that surfaces what you believe to be the most noteworthy, relevant Tweets.

Each timeline is public and has its own page on twitter.com, making it easy to share so others can follow along in real time as you add more Tweets. And since custom timelines are part of our Twitter for Websites toolkit, you can embed these timelines on your website.

What you can do with custom timelines

Share the best Tweets about a topic you care about, or an event –– planned or unplanned –– that’s happening right now. Whether you want to collect the best Tweets about a TV show or help people find the latest information about fast-moving real-time situations, custom timelines let you give everyone a place to follow along....

Want to be a superstar, but no time for social media? Fake it with Ghost Tweeter | {grow}

Want to be a superstar, but no time for social media? Fake it with Ghost Tweeter | {grow} | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

"What if I told you that you could become an industry “thought leader” without ever writing a blog post. Or, that you could achieve Twitter stardom without personally sending a single tweet.I didn’t believe it either, but some people are apparently doing it. Maybe even some people you follow. And you may never guess how they’re doing it.

Ghost Tweeting is one of a number of companies that have emerged to outsource the writing and distribution of all your blogs, tweets, and posts. They will even handle all the social media engagement for you. “All the benefits, none of the work,” reads the tagline on their website....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

The challenge of "ghost" social services like this is to do it transparently and ethically. It's definitely not "authentic. I've advised many clients on strategies and helped some move forward with team tweeting but always transparently. I'll be curious to hear how others think about this practice.

Jeff Domansky's comment, August 7, 2013 3:28 PM
Thanks for your comment Malek. I think the days of "ghost" writing on social media are limited without open and honest disclosure and transparency. Nothing wrong with teams tweeting but many, including high profile personalities, authors, politicians and many others will resist. When the you know what hits the fan, that's when the trouble starts. Of course, when the intern screws up, you can always claim you were hacked LOL.

B2Bs should Tweet before noon, B2Cs in the evening

B2Bs should Tweet before noon, B2Cs in the evening | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

A study that sets out to identify spam Tweets from real social media content shows marketers how to tune out the noise, but also when to reach their target audiences. The research conducted by Gabriela Tavares and Aldo Faisal of the Imperial College of London discovered that Bots, or fake Twitter accounts, are active through all hours of the day unlike the people managing personal and corporate social media accounts.

According to the findings, which monitored Tweets in a 24-hours period, B2B companies will see the most engagement when they publish social media content during the first half the work day. Tweets peak around 10 a.m. after a sharp activity uptick in the morning, and continue to trend downward throughout the afternoon and into the evening....

How to Use Twitter for Crowdsourcing and Simple Market Research | Social Media Today

How to Use Twitter for Crowdsourcing and Simple Market Research | Social Media Today | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Having a social media presence can be an invaluable resource for providing insights into consumer needs, sentiment, and opinions towards a business, service or brand. Social media is by no means a replacement for traditional market research, but it can be used in a broader sense. That broader sense is becoming a widely adopted trend referred to as Crowdsourcing.

Crowdsourcing is the act of outsourcing tasks to an undefined, large group of people or community (a "crowd"), through an open call. Twitter is the perfect platform for implementing such a tactic and will often yield insightful, and sometimes surprising, results. Using Twitter to openly ask your followers and the community as a whole has additional benefits. By listening, organizations gain first-hand insight on their customers' desires. You have the option to follow up with your respondents in real time. Plus, because participants are not being led by moderators or necessarily thinking about the expectations for responses, the answers they give can be more genuine and revealing....

Five good and four bad examples of brands using Twitter | Econsultancy

Five good and four bad examples of brands using Twitter | Econsultancy | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Twitter is a brilliant tool for communicating with consumers and when used effectively can be a great way of building customer loyalty. In recent weeks I’ve come across a number of brands that have excellent Twitter strategies and several that I thought were less impressive. This could be because they were dull, unimaginative or simply weren’t living up to their potential. So to shine some light on the differences between those brands getting it right and those that perhaps aren’t, here are five good and four bad examples of brands using Twitter....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Here's a great contrast between five companies that "get" Twitter and four that don't. Lots of useful lessons for marketing and PR.

Calvin Romeo's curator insight, August 15, 2013 10:53 PM

Effective communication with consumers is an important and vital part for any business or entity to have a successful future. If this step handled with a lack of effort/poorly or if the consumer perceives that the brand is boring it could affect that particular brand being considered at all in the consumer’s decision making process. Also when it comes to the consumer's Psychological process the first part of this step is Motivation which is factors that would compel a consumer to take any particular action or not. This article shows a good variety of examples of business that have used the social media network 'Twitter' to engage with potential consumer and other that have not used it so well.

MARTIN LEE's comment, August 19, 2013 7:00 AM
Being effective and engaging is the goal of every communication. Twitter has emerged as the primary platform for organisations to communicate with their consumers. This article contrasts accounts that really know how to use Twitter to engage their customers, and accounts that don't really know what they're doing with Twitter, and look as though they are just following the trend without understanding it. The article was insightful in the way it portrayed "boring" and "unexciting" 'tweets' with accounts that are not heavily followed. Marketers attempt to engage consumers via different mediums such as verbal, graphic, musical, and animation channels which can all be accessed on Twitter.
Kier Segui's comment, August 20, 2013 3:02 AM
This article states examples of brands that are good at marketing through twitter and brands that are bad at marketing on twitter. Social media a an emerging and very powerful resource for communicating with consumers. Twitter is used by most brands to reply to their consumers questions and updating them on current happenings within the brand. However you must understand how to effectively use Twitter in order to make full use of its consumer reach potential. Tweets easily go viral and what is posted by brands on Twitter easily gets passed onto others. If a company were to get a negative response from one of its consumers than it could potentially damage the reputation of that brand. Engaging with consumers the correct way makes the process of marketing through social media much easier.

Analyze Your Twitter Account with ReTweetLab for More ReTweets | Dan Zarrella | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

One of my favorite topics to research is ReTweeting. I have several very large (millions and hundreds of millions of rows) datasets that I use to do my analysis. The results of my research with these databases are best practices, generated across many industries, timezones, account types and languages. This data is a great starting point for your experimentation.

The best data is always your data.

So I created a free tool, ReTweetLab that allows you to do the same kind of analysis that I conduct on my large datasets on your account (or any other Twitter account you want).

Jeff Domansky's insight:

I can't say enough about that Zarrella. His knowledge of social media measurement is super and he is a super approachable, sharing guy. By creating this new, free, Twitter analytical tool, the insight you gain could not only increase the number of reTweets, it could make your overall effectiveness much higher.

ReTweet Lab instantly analyzes a segment of your personal or business Twitter stream and delivers up to a dozen benchmarks worth analyzing and taking action to improve what you do.

Highly recommended. 10/10
