Crisis Communications: Nine Reasons Common Sense Is Wrong | Mr. Media Training

Crisis Communications: Nine Reasons Common Sense Is Wrong | Mr. Media Training | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
One crisis coach says that nine common crisis communications rules don't always apply. Is he right?

I have a soft spot for people who make smart counterarguments that challenge conventional wisdom.

I spotted one such piece by North Carolina-based crisis coach Rick Amme recently on PR Daily. In his piece, Rick argues that nine popular pieces of advice often espoused by media trainers aren’t right – or more precisely, aren’t always right.

Rick takes direct aim at some of the advice I’ve offered on this blog, questioning the wisdom of conventionally accepted gems such as, “never say no comment.” So why am I promoting Rick’s work when it questions my own? Because he’s right....

Congratulations! You’ve landed your exec an interview with that big-shot reporter. Now what?

The journalist probably has no idea how much preparation is going on at your end, but your scramble to write a briefing document has just begun.

Should You Delete Offensive (But Newsworthy) Tweets? | Mr. Media Training | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Mitt Romney's new spokesperson deleted 800 offensive tweets he sent prior to his new job. Is that a good idea, or a bad-looking cover up?

Hillary Clinton looks old. Rachel Maddow looks like a boy. Callista Gingrich looks like her hair snaps on. Old ladies look awful in backless dresses.

Nasty stuff, yes. But few of us would be terribly surprised if some teenage boy who didn’t know any better tweeted out those misogynistic sentiments.

Trouble is, those tweets weren’t sent by an immature teenager. Say hello to Mitt Romney’s new spokesman....

Communicating Through a Crisis: Sometimes You Need To Know When To Shut Up

Communicating Through a Crisis: Sometimes You Need To Know When To Shut Up | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

People in the public limelight have more opportunities than others to say stupid things. Ozzie Guillen, the new manager of the Miami Marlins, admitted that what he said was "very stupid." That's putting it mildly. Why would a Latino in Miami praise Fidel Castro? Yeah, very stupid indeed.

"Guillen sparked a firestorm when he told Time magazine recently that he respected Castro for being able to lead Cuba for six decades. 'I respect Fidel Castro,' Guillen said in the article. 'You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that son of a bitch is still there.'"...

Who really said, ‘The four most frightening words in the English language are “Mike Wallace is here” ‘? | Poynter. | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

An interesting question: Who really said “The four most frightening words in the English language are ‘Mike Wallace is here’ “? The Los Angeles Times attributes it to Joseph Coors. “Wallace had such a fearsome reputation as an interviewer that ‘Mike Wallace is here to see you’ were among the most dreaded words a newsmaker could hear,” writes David Bauder. In the Washington Post, Adam Bernstein wisely goes with the passive tense: “For anyone hiding a secret, it was often said, four of the most dreaded words in the English language were ‘Mike Wallace is here.’” In an AP gallery: “His reputation preceded him: ‘The four most dreaded words in the English language: Mike Wallace is here,’ as the saying goes.” Someone get an investigative journalist on this pronto!...

Anthony Weiner And Jon Edwards: What Should They Do Now? | Mr. Media Training | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
It's been a while since the Anthony Weiner and John Edwards scandals dominated the headlines. What can they do to get their reputations back?

Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY) resigned last June after tweeting lewd photos of himself to various women he met on the Internet.

Senator John Edwards (D-NC) ran for president in 2008 while cheating on his cancer-stricken wife. His affair resulted in a child with his mistress.

Both men experienced the red-hot media spotlight to an extreme that few public figures ever have to endure. They both handled their scandals differently – and as a result, one man might be headed for public redemption while the other one may live out his days as a pariah....

15-Seconds Blog: Acid Test for Spokesmen | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Don't you hate it when one of your employees falls into a vat of acid?

It was a very New Jersey sounding industrial accident. But why do we at 15-Seconds Blog tell you about it? Because employees at Swepco, the company which owned the building with the flimsy roof and the tank of toxic stuff beneath it, refused to comment.

We can imagine why. Someone probably suggested that they are going to get sued and it was best to clam up. If so, they were half right. They almost certainly ARE going to get sued -- but nothing is gained by trying to make the accident look more mysterious than it was....

An Easy Tip To Help You Deliver Short, Powerful Answers | Mr. Media Training

An Easy Tip To Help You Deliver Short, Powerful Answers | Mr. Media Training | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Here's an easy technique to help you reduce your long, wandering answers into a short, tight and powerful response that reporters love.

“Talking short” is difficult. Of course it is. We’re not time-restricted in most settings, so we don’t have to spend a lot of time worrying about the length of our responses. If I want to share a story with my wife, for example, she rarely taps her watch and tells me to tighten up my story. And I’m guessing that your friends don’t tell you to speed up your storytelling when you’re lingering over a beer.

But it is possible to talk short, and this post will give you an easy tip to make brevity much easier to achieve....
