Phil Jackson and Doc Rivers use visualization to help their players

Phil Jackson and Doc Rivers use visualization to help their players | Sports and Performance Psychology | Scoop.it
Phil Jackson and Doc Rivers have something in common. They use visualization techniques to help their players.

In the article I learned the importance of visualization for a sports team. The article talks about two of the NBA's great coaches Phil Jackson and Doc Rivers. The writer explains specific examples of visualization that the coaches made their players use to picture being champions. Rivers had his player plan out their championship parade route almost immediately after taking over the team. Some coaches may see this as cockiness but these coaching greats just want their players to know it can be them raising a championship banner. I selected this article to learn about methods two of the best coaches in sports use to motivate their players. If I were to follow a career in coaching motivating my players to become champions would be extremely important.

1: I learned about a way that coaches can help their players through increasing their mental ability when they train.

2: I thought that it was interesting how the coaches were able to get their team to the finals by having their players imagine that they won the championships the previous year when they could not make it past the second round.

3: I selected this article since I think that it is important to learn about how  coaches for competitive sports teams are thinking outside of the box to make their teams successful.

4: This information will help me in that it will encourage me to think outside of the box when I have to improve anything in the sports world.

I learned that Doc Rivers, head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, uses visualization exercises to help his team envision themselves as champions. The franchise has never made it past the second round of the playoffs, but Rivers wants his team to believe they could be champions. He covered up the Lakers' championship banners and retired jerseys and rented out a suite for his team to watch the L.A. Kings raise their championship banner and imagine it was them who won a title. I found it interesting that Phil Jackson used similar techniques. During the 2001 NBA Finals, he made Lakers guard Tyronn Lue wear a sleeve while he practiced because he wanted him to envision how he would guard Philadelphia 76ers superstar guard Allen Iverson, who always wore a sleeve during games. I chose this article because I wanted to learn how Doc Rivers used visualization to help his players. I was a little confused by the the article name. This information will help me in the sport management industry because if I decide to become a coach, I could use the same visualization techniques to help my players envision themselves as champions.
