Maker Mindset and our Invention Literacy PBL | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
I had some visitors in my library makerspace last week that were wanting to add an aspect of maker education into their own libraries.

As they walked around our space, visited with my collaborating English teacher, and witnessed students prototyping for our invention literacy project, they said something surprising.

“We noticed you have traditional wooden library chairs and tables, so it isn’t about the furniture, is it? Maker Education? It’s about the mindset?”

"Makerspaces are becoming more prevalent in our educational settings these days. Kevin Mowat shared with me Diana Rendina‘s current definition of a makerspace:

"A makerspace is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials."

A great definition to be sure. The scope of the “place” is the issue for me, as it is for my colleagues as well. Schools shouldn’t just have A makerspace… Schools should BE a makerspace!  It’s more about mindset of the teaching staff!"

As teachers many of believe it is important to teach students about growth mindset. This research provides additional information about the value of doing this. Quoting the last paragraph from this article in Time:

"The takeaway: How we’re predisposed to think about problems changes the way our brains handle them. Beyond the abilities we’ve inherited, the most important factor in achievement may be believing that it’s within reach."

Do you teach your students about growth mindset? Is this a topic of discussion with other staff in your school? Jackie Gerstein has shared three excellent resources in this post that focuses on growth mindset.

She has created an infographic (image above) that looks at fixed mindset and growth mindset, showing how a student may identify based on their mindset.

The next step was putting the infographic into ThingLink and creating links to over 15 resources. Here is the link: ThingLink version of the infographic.

There is also a slideshow that provides additional resources (although some may be repeated in the ThingLink). The slideshow is split into four sections:

* Mindsets

* Historical Background

* The Educator with a Growth Mindset

* Teaching the Growth Mindset to your Learners

Since this post is based on a workshop she provided it is a great resource to share with teachers at your school (or other teachers whom you know). Make sure to check out the resources for students. You may find yourself creating a poster to help your students learn more about growth mindset.

Mindsets for the 21st century and beyond

Mindsets for the 21st century and beyond | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
The world is morphing into a place that no one can foresee. How can we prepare students to live and work in that place?

Not long ago, people could learn job skills and use them indefinitely, but now jobs and skill sets are becoming obsolete at an alarming rate. This means that students, and later adults, need to expect and thrive on challenges and know how to turn failures into stepping stones to a brighter future.

When I was a beginning researcher I wanted to see how children coped with setbacks, so I gave 5th graders simple problems followed by hard problems—ones they couldn’t solve. Some hated the hard ones, some tolerated them, but, to my surprise, some relished them. One unforgettable child rubbed his hands together, smacked his lips, and declared, “I love a challenge!” Another said, “I was hoping this would be informative.” They didn’t think they were failing, they thought they were learning. Although this was years ago, they were already 21st century kids.

Four Teaching Moves That Promote A Growth Mindset In All Readers - MindShift

Four Teaching Moves That Promote A Growth Mindset In All Readers - MindShift | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Reading can be a very fraught topic for parents, teachers and students. Strong reading skills are essential for accessing later curriculum, so teachers put a lot of emphasis on it early. But the pressure and angst of getting students reading on schedule can sap the joy out of an activity that many young children love. At its heart, reading is a way to access stories, which in turn make readers wonder about the world. In the race to get kids reading, it can be easy to treat reading like a procedure, instead of the complicated experience that it is.

'Don't lie to children. It's not all in the mind,' says genetics expert

'Don't lie to children. It's not all in the mind,' says genetics expert | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Professor Robert Plomin, who has for years studied the relationship between genes and learning, argues that even though genetics don’t predetermine a child’s educational success, they do shape his or her inclinations early on.

In his view, genetics have very strong influence on academic results despite the intervention of parents and teachers to help with their learning.

His opinions challenge the growing popularity of the so-called growth mindset theory – developed by professor Carol Dweck of Stanford University – which argues that pupils can develop their skills through hard work and dedication.

Tony Meehan's curator insight, September 20, 2014 4:57 PM

Working with learners of low SES and whose environment more often than not ensures they have a fixed mindset, it is important that we help them to redefine what success is. Too often it is fixed around being rich, having a big car, house, jewellery etc. These learners then become preoccupied with looking for the short-cut to success, to the riches they believe will make them happy. It doesn't work out like that of course. How then to help the alter their thinking?

Dweck's work is essential in this. But as this article states it cannot be seen as "a task to complete".  It requires a shift in thinking of all in an organisation, a movement for a whole-school way of thinking, involving also parents or carers.  This article by Costa, Garmston and Zimmerman provides a solid basis for promoting growth mindsets in educators.

5 Strategies For Creating A Genius Mindset In Students

5 Strategies For Creating A Genius Mindset In Students | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

"When we hear the word genius, certain people come immediately to mind—Albert Einstein in mathematics, or Warren Buffett in investing—but what exactly sets these people apart?

It’s easy to simply shrug and say to ourselves, “Those people are just different.  They have something most people don’t, and it’s as simple as that.”

But the steps taken to arrive at a place of genius are actually more concrete, and have less to do with innate talent, than you might think.

When it comes to cultivating intelligence, mindset is a huge factor..."
