Plagiarism Education: Considerations for the Semester Start-up | Faculty Focus

Plagiarism Education: Considerations for the Semester Start-up | Faculty Focus | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Plagiarism is concerning for colleges and universities (Curtis & Vardanega, 2016). Students begin higher education with varying degrees of knowledge on the topic of plagiarism; sometimes students have a limited understanding of the behaviors that constitute plagiarism. Gourlay and Deane (2012) suggest “a proportion of plagiarism is committed via confusion over how to integrate and reference source materials into academic writing” (p. 19). Moreover, some students might be unfamiliar regarding when they can claim an opinion as their own and when they need to use a citation (Ballantine & McCourt Larres, 2010). Being unfamiliar with the behaviors that constitute plagiarism might be a reason why students engage in this type of academic misconduct (Insley, 2011).

How to Turn a Check for Plagiarism Into a Teachable Moment | Faculty Focus

How to Turn a Check for Plagiarism Into a Teachable Moment | Faculty Focus | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

I started teaching economics in higher education almost a decade ago, and yet the memory of the first time I asked a student to meet with me to talk about plagiarism is still painful. Rather than resolve anything, in the middle of our conversation he abruptly stood up and walked out, slamming the door behind him.

Throughout my career from my bachelor’s degree to my PhD, I had been warned about plagiarism. We learned the dos and don’ts in my undergraduate work and during graduate school when writing research articles for peer-reviewed journals. I remember wondering why anyone would risk his or her reputation. And yet thinking back to that first student plagiarist, the problem made me realize that plagiarism is more complex than simple laziness.

Testing of support tools for plagiarism detection

Testing of support tools for plagiarism detection | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
There is a general belief that software must be able to easily do things that humans find difficult. Since finding sources for plagiarism in a text is not an easy task, there is a wide-spread expectation that it must be simple for software to determine if a text is plagiarized or not. Software cannot determine plagiarism, but it can work as a support tool for identifying some text similarity that may constitute plagiarism. But how well do the various systems work? This paper reports on a collaborative test of 15 web-based text-matching systems that can be used when plagiarism is suspected. It was conducted by researchers from seven countries using test material in eight different languages, evaluating the effectiveness of the systems on single-source and multi-source documents. A usability examination was also performed. The sobering results show that although some systems can indeed help identify some plagiarized content, they clearly do not find all plagiarism and at times also identify non-plagiarized material as problematic.

Reveal Your Students’ Plagiarism in Google Docs - EdTechReview™ (ETR) | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Checking the papers of your students can take a lot of time.

Depending on the subject and the discipline in question, you may spend hours evaluating the work your class has done. This has always been a typical problem for teachers everywhere, and it might have gotten worse with the advancement of plagiarism. Now you not only have to check papers for their correspondence with your requirements. You need to make sure that the writing is original—otherwise, all your further actions will become worthless.

Why a Plagiarism-Detection Company Is Now a Billion-Dollar Business

Why a Plagiarism-Detection Company Is Now a Billion-Dollar Business | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Stamping out student plagiarism is big business. How big? $1.735 billion, to be exact. That’s the price that Advance, a privately held media, communications, and technology company, will pay to purchase Turnitin, the 800-pound gorilla of plagiarism-detection services. Although not the largest ed-tech deal ever made, it is, in the words of one analyst, “massive.”

So what does the deal, announced on Wednesday, mean for higher education and for education technology? We talked with a few ed-tech observers, as well as senior officers at Turnitin and Advance, to sort it all out. Their takeaways:

Jorge Tuesta Figueroa's curator insight, February 20, 2018 5:43 PM
